A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

We just killed a coon the other night as well. She looked like she was nursing so hopefully by killing her we wiped her brood out too. She killed 3 hens in 3 nights and nearly got a rooster the night we caught her. We caught her in a steel snare type trap and hubby shot her. Two of the hens had chicks.. makes me so mad.

Ironically the rooster we used as "bait" was a no count cull Marans that has been a butthole so his days were numbered anyway.. he survived the encounter without so much as a scratch. Thats the way it goes.

Anyone have any experience with severe foot/leg injuries in turkeys? My son's 6 week old poult was attacked by a rat the other night along with a pullet and his foot is mangled. I have him in a wire bottomed brooder by himself but he can see his former brood mates through the wire. Will he survive with a leg injury if he doesn't recover use of his foot? You can't tell in the pic but one toe is completely torn off and just hanging by decaying flesh. It smells terrible and looks gruesome. I am an RN with a strong stomach so I plan on trying to nurse him and keep the wounds clean. I will spray it with Dakins solution but I am torn between leaving it open or covering it with a dressing. I am devastated. This has truly been a terrible year. :(

We cleared the brooder of all chicks and are in the process of taking care of the rats. They burrowed into the brooder.
