A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Can't be the food, it is inside and she never goes inside.

the wild hen has been back here again. The hussy shows up every spring.

I don’t recall if I mentioned this, but the DNR showed a photo of a rare albino turkey.

It looked like the not so rare royal palm to me..

This one spent most of the day outside the perimeter fence yesterday but came inside before dark thirty and roosted in a cottonwood.

This morning she was with the other turkeys under the bird feeder. She made no effort to leave when I refilled the bird feeder and joined in with the others "rescuing" any spilled BOSS. I suspect that a neighbor has been spending time with and acclimating her to people.

Would wild genetics bring down fish n game or can you do with a little hybrid vigor?
Yes and no. By the law, any wild hybrids belong to the state. By actual actions, the game wardens have far more to be concerned about than wild crosses with domestics and who they belong to.

Personally, any wild crosses hatched by the wild hen will be hers and she can keep them as far as I am concerned. I am breeding for Sweetgrass. I don't care about a wild hen coming in but I do not want any wild toms coming in.

Two falls ago, she brought her two wild boys in with her. It was turkey season. I purchased a couple of turkey permits. Needless to say there are no wild toms showing up anymore.

First 6 poults of the season, picture to follow. I first seen them Monday in a place they couldn't jump out of. I wanted her to stay as long as possible. I had seen hens adding eggs and wanted to give them a chance.... so I just threw in food and didn't take pictures..
she was going nuts today trying to get them to jump out, so I put a heavy coat with a hood and put them in a bucket. She was not happy, flogging jumping on my back and head. But now she has her babies and hopefully does a good job. One is small but I seen it Tuesday, she had 6 marked eggs and they are gone. 5 newer eggs in various stages. I put them under a hen due the 5th. Other hens due the 8th, 11, 14, 15th

I found the remains of my wayward missing blue sweetgrass. I knew she went into the field to brood, but I was hoping to find her before that skunk family did... Alas, I recovered a severed wing instead.
On the plus side, I discovered the skunk den.

There are now fewer skunk families.

Let's hope the baby skunks were still with mommy and daddy skunk... I suspect they were based on the age of that den. There was green grass under the tailings.

That fresh dug den had a two foot diameter entrance... And they drug a full grown turkey hen along with fryer aged cockerels, about 20 of them, in there.
Makes me wonder just how many babies those skunks had...
Amazing how many cockerels they got how did they catch them, skunks don't climb like a coon!
