This is true. But I would rather her enjoy some freedom as opposed to keeping her confined all spring/summer. The dogs protect the birds for the most part and she stays close to the house. Hopefully no accidents happen. Not always. Things happen.
My turkeys stay home because they are fenced in. They do not hang out by the house at all.My turkeys have proven to be bigger homebodies than the chickens. Aside from going down the bank to lay eggs (which isn’t far at all), they all stay right by the house waiting for feed.
If mine start wandering too far I will corral the loose ones into the goat lot. So far, they are staying close. The LGDs keep the wild turkeys ran off which is a good thing. My turkeys stay home because they are fenced in. They do not hang out by the house at all.
My neighbor a 1/2 mile away does not contain his turkeys and they get around.
I had 3 wild hens move in last fall. After I gave a tom to my neighbor, they found him and moved over to the neighbor's for the rest of the winter.
A couple of days ago, the wild hens came back and brought the neighbor's whole flock with them.
The neighbor was out of town. I herded them into my area until he got home at which time we herded them all back to his place.
She is lovely! This is Tiger, the Penciled Fall Fire hen. As much as I would love to single mate her back to her sire, I turned her out with the rest to free range. I am only hatching a couple of batches of turkey eggs this year from the Painted pens, sadly due to school. There is always next year…

Unfortunately, yeah. I lost my favorite chicken recently. She just randomly died locked up in her breeding cage. She was almost 5 years old, but she was healthy up until she died. Heart attack or something, I don't know. Not always. Things happen.
Our boss hen was also a chocolate. She wasn't silver tipped thoughGot this pic of Hershey strutting the other day. She is the boss hen of the goat lot this year. She is a silver tipped chocolate.
