A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Ralph- Babies are so cute!!  Good luck with the BBB and BBW.  Our BBB (turkey dinner) is such a character.  It is going to be hard to eat that one...

On the topic of my other two being male or female:

The Lavender is getting bigger that the Chocolate.  It's snood (the lavender) is growing bigger.  It kicks it's legs when you flip it over.
The Chocolate is a bit smaller, slightly more docile.  Holds it's legs in when you flip it over.

So, really I have no idea, but I am going with Banshee (the lavender) being a tom and Tomahawk (the chocolate) being a hen.  Only time will tell, but for now that is my guess.

Wait another 3-4 days & post comparison pix again.

Alright Ralphie, I'll bite. What is the "penny trick"?

Will do Silkie.

I am thinking you do not trust me, I am hurt.

BTW I tried the upside down poult thing and all I learned was they do not like being held upside down.. What were the rules for that one again?

You need an old wheat penny, the new ones do not work as well, they do not have enough copper in them.

clean the penny well, then rub the penny 3 times on the turkeys head, Flip the penny If It lands head you have a girl or a boy, if it lands tails you have a boy or a girl.

Easy Peasy!

Easy Peasy indeed! I either have boys or girls or one of each!

The upside down thing is if they pull their legs in, female. If they kick or have one leg out with one leg in, male.

How do you like this website I just started?

It probably won't go live until after Christmas, and I don't even know if I'll have pheasants and guineas yet by then.

That is a nice site.

I tired the upside down thing again, All my poults dislike being turned on their backs...

Other than that I can not tell a thing.

I lost a poult today one that had pasty butt the other day, I thought I saved him, I guess not, at least he died with a clean butt.

Bummer Ralph! Sorry about your poult. Was it a blue or a JJ and Ethel?

Maybe you have all toms then?
I really have no idea if I am doing it right. It is just something I find interesting to occupy my time. As if I need to add anything to my already busy days.

Nice website Ladycat!

I am wondering something. When can I move my poults outside? They will have a heating pad brooder warmer, but I honestly am not so sure they are bright enough to figure it out. I tried last week before it rained for the rest of the week, and they didn't go in when they were cold. I put them in to show them it was warm, they came back out, shivering. Silly turkeys.
The cold and wet weather is taking a break for now, with lows into the 40's. I am happy to keep them inside in the brooder, but they need more room to run. As displayed by turkey dinner flying out for escape runs. Now Banshee is following suit. Tomahawk is trying, but can't fly out yet.
I know mother hens raise them all the time in the wild, but I don't have a mother hen...

You could let them out during the day and at night put them inside and close them in to teach them. It may take a week or two to teach them to go in at night.

Here I put three week old's out in a larger brooder that is enclosed on three sides on one end and open wire on the other end. At the closed end I hang a light for warmth at night.

Just set 18 more Turkey eggs yesterday, 7 came from someone wanting me to hatch some Nargs (I get half that hatch) and the other 11 are from my hens... This is the last set until after June.. Both my hens are still laying but I am going to try and let them set there own..

The Hen that lays in the old brooder box on the back of the property will be the easy one, nobody else lays eggs in there so my plan is to just let her build up her own clutch, I'll add the other hens eggs daily until she feels she has enough..
Hen that lays her eggs in the coop is going to be a bit harder, she doesn't have a "favorite" nesting box just whichever one has the most eggs, no amount of kicking her off nest has deterred her from laying in the coop so I gave up.. My plan is to load one box with fake eggs (once turkey #1 has her clutch) and let her decide.. I will more than likely just give her Chicken eggs as I don't trust she will be left alone and the Turkey eggs are just to precious to waste.

Thoughts??
