A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

R2elk...last winter it got down into the teens in Memphis, just for a night or two. We thought we were dying.

Last year we had a cold snap come through in November of -27°F that combined with a three week warm spell in January followed by more sub zero temperatures pretty much killed all the mature elm trees.

This morning at 5 AM it was down to -18° and has now warmed up all the way to -16°.

Please do enjoy your warm temperatures.

We have had 22" of snow so far this month, 12" of it in one session that combined with high winds directly from the north created 4' drifts in my driveway.

Even with the cold and snow the turkeys all roost outside at night. They spend most of the day in the coop but it is always back outside for the night.

Wow, crazy birds! We had down to -20 last winter too.it was SO cold! But so far this winter feels like spring. We're supposed to have 65° today. I'm sure the snow will get here soon though. We'll be back to the 30's in a couple days :/

We have down to -20 and further every winter. -40 is not uncommon.

We are having an extremely warm winter, it only got to 6 degrees, on the above side. So still warm.

All said to save my Minnesota Extreme weather credentials, brrrrrrrr R2elk that is cold!

The birds were only out for about 2 hours on Christmas day other wise they have been locked up for last 3 days. They are going to be happy, when I get enough coffee into me to go open their doors and plow snow.

I'm "appreciating" the warm weather at the holidays. It sure makes it easier to travel. But it takes something away from Christmas. Growing up in St. Louis you always hold out hope for that white Christmas as a kid. As a gardener I keep running around looking at buds on trees & bushes.

I find it interesting that the turkeys roost out in such cold weather. Tough birds!

Ralphie. ..speaking of "Coffee"...?????

The older I get the more I appreciate the moderate winters in Memphis. Our issue tends to be ice storms. They can be devastating. Of course our summers are horrendous. I hear San Diego has perfect weather all year. Maybe we all migrate and start some huge turkey breeding program in the middle of all the mansions!!'

Man... is its rain ever going to let up? Feedman, are you getting this nonstop rain too? All kinds of flooding around St. Louis.

Coffee must be shy she is not posting here a lot.

She says I have gotten her addicted to turkeys and she has never owned one yet. She has been asking lots of Turkey questions and Porter questions in texts. I know she is looking forward to getting them. Porter is so huge he should throw big babies. I do not understand where his size comes from as JJ and Ethel are medium size turkeys. Of course, they were so badly mistreated when I got them and their living conditions so bad, I doubt they got what they needed to reach their full potential.

Porter must be 6 inches taller than JJ and as heavy or heavier and he is still a Teen and has not filled out. Also he can be a bellybutton to the others. Yesterday I saw him eating another Toms beard! (well baby beard) Even Porter only has a baby beard.

Memphis it is only 13 hours from Memphis to here. You could make it with lots of coffee and Ginger or Penguins company on the way home... If you left from your Mo house, you could make it faster even. And If I met you at Albert Lea, (Iowa Border) You would do it even faster!

Wow, didn't realize Porter was so huge! I think his belly button behavior is just due to his age & running with delinquents! She needs to take him alone for a few weeks and he will bond!

COFFEE...do it...you won't regret it! Turkeys can be amazing pets! Like Ralphie, I too would chose my turkeys over my chickens if I had too. And I love my chickens! There is nothing better than your" lapper" falling asleep in your lap!

Ralph. ..I would assume JJ& Ethel, since they were found living under a house, did not have the proper nutrition as poults. Are any of your other tom's as big as Porter?

Coffee....turkeys have such unique personalities that we developed a Turkey Temperament Scale. Several of us got our turkeys as teenage birds and they have bonded easily. Mine are better behaved than my chickens!

Ginger and Penguin both have huge height, Penguin is filling out nice. Ginger is a tad gangly. Actually JJ and Ethel's babies are larger than the blues' I purchased from a respected heritage breeder. So I am thinking you are right they never got the feed, nutrition or exercise they needed..
