A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Wow it's been a busy week - I had to catch up on my reading!

Holm - hope your rooster is on the mend now... He looks perky in his pictures, so I hope that's a sign of getting better.

Aurora - did Pebbles stay out after her sit-in with all the babies? Hopefully she's getting back to being a turkey again!

JadedPheonix - baby turkeys will require you to post lots of pictures on this thread :). Can't wait to see your silkie being "mom" to some of the poults!

Feedman - so cool that the eggs are developing - can't wait to see what hatches

Well it appears that I managed to convince Big Bird that she's not broody right now, and she has started laying again - whew! On the downside I now have 2 broody chickens in there. My buff Orpington that was broody at Christmas, is broody again. And now my Cochin has decided that she's going to join in. I don't have fertile eggs, and don't need more chickens right now.....sigh. I'm going to run out of nest boxes if they keep this up

You need to build your own Gitmo like I did. It broke her in a little over a week and she laid already!

I think when I laid out the towel to cover her head and the board to tie her to while I water boarded her was the thing that flipped her.

All 25 of my turkey eggs in the bator look great at 11 days! Chicken eggs, not so much. I tossed 9, but put 9 more in, since it's still early for them. I figure I need about 100 chickens in the freezer to get the dogs and I through a year. My goal is to not buy any chicken or turkey from my dog food guy, ever again!

That's a pretty impressive goal. How/what do you feed them besides free range?

I assume you mean the birds and not the dogs. I don't free range the dogs

. Actually, I don't free range my birds either. Bobcats and coyotes stopped that. Right now they are in a run. I have several grow frames in the run, planted with a variety of things they can graze on. I spend way too much on feed. But, hopefully, I'll be moving them to a friend's place where they can free range. They don't even shut their chickens up at night (I will be). They've lost birds to hawks, owls and neighbor dogs (gone now). They haven't even had a racoon. So I'm hoping, between the 2 places, I will have the space to raise what I need. My landlord just gave me permission to build some raised beds behind his shop

. I think he feels sorry for me for having to farm out everything I do over half the county.

We have hawks, eagles and coyotes, too. But the turkey that adopted us seems to keep the hawks & eagles at bay in the yard. We lock ours up at night, though. Too many coyotes around.

I have a small portable greenhouse inside the run that I got on clearance at Tractor supply for $17. It has 4 shelves with some microgreens, cat grass, nasturtiums and lettuces growing in it. What are you growing in your frames?
