A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Hi I am new I am currently looking for two turkeys. I have raised chicken current ducks pot belly pig rabbits. Why not learn and have a turkeys. My barnyard friends.

Welcome.

1st what do you want to do with your turkeys? Just for meat or pets and future egg production.

That will make a difference whether you want broad breasted (bbw or bbb) or heritage?

Most feed stores carry bbw. Prices for them are in the 6 - 8 dollar a poult range.

Heritage prices are 10-17 dollars per poult.

One other place to look for birds locally is craigslist.

Good luck.

And if you get some you will like them

Happy Easter ya'll! Currently it's beautiful in Ste. Genevieve Mo. But apparently we have storms moving in. Bummer!
My chicken/turkey sitter is reporting all my hens are taking dust baths. She's down there stealing eggs for brunch.
Ralph....when is Penguin.02 due??

Enjoy the weather. On the western side it's been raining since 5.

Went out once but rain was cold so retired to the recliner til it quits.

We want to start the first sets will be pets and layers. But eventually we may use some of baby's to feed family if need. We have had to do that yet with ducks chicken rabbits. Pot belly pig. Only A last resort. We would probably start with price line of 8.00 is what the feed store said they charge when they have them in stock they sell fast they said.we what to breed for a little while some may be in incubator and some will be the turkey moms. We have already put a want ad in Craig's list about a week ago. No response yet.

If you want turkeys for eggs and pets.
Make sure you get heritage variety.

Examples royal palm. Bourbon reds. Blue slate.

The broadbreasted are butcher turkeys. Bred for fast growth. They can have health and leg issues if kept for long without special diet. 2nd the only way they can reproduce is thru ai due to their size.

When I went out to visit with the girls yesterday morning, I couldn't find a few of them. I went into the barn to see where everyone was and Coco shot out of the turkey nest box. I looked in the nest box and found Big Bird was also in the turkey nest box. Since I was "LOOKING at her", she decided that she didn't want to be there anymore and left. I looked in the box to see if they had managed to lay any eggs while stacked in the box....and found one of my buff orpingtons. No eggs and 3 birds piled in a narrow 13" x 26" nest box  You'd think there were no other nest boxes in the barn to use?! My birds are weird!

I have no baby pictures to share but we had another sunny day yesterday.....the girls took their bug-hunting ventures very seriously :). Adding Coco has been really good for Big Bird - they seem to like going on adventures together.

I had three turkey hens in one nest today. All three seem to be on the edge of broodiness.

They were all hissing and puffing up. There was one egg under them. Not a good sign.

I might have to take the Tom out of the pen and let the hens each have a barrel (I use them for nests.)
