A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I have just pulled an Aurora......

My DW the WWD went downstairs and yelled at me ( her yelling at me is not unusual) " You have chicks in the incubator on the left".

I immediately corrected her and said " You mean the right"

Which brought a sharp rebuke " I know the left from the right".

I not wanting to start a fight over her being wrong again, replied as all good husbands do " Yes dear, I am sorry I doubted you"... While thinking to myself, she just never learns...

I went downstairs to the incubators and walked to the one on the right and started to look through the ports. She being a sweetie said "I said on the left not the right".

I told her "this is the hatcher and guineas should be hatching today."

Her response was rather curt " well, they might be hatching in that one today, but they have hatched in this one already".

I opened the door to play along with her. There was a turkey on the floor of the incubator, I looked inside and there was another one in the rear. I handed them to her. While saying softly "Well, I guess were right this time".

The eggs were clearly marked for the 19th. However, I remember when I set them there were a couple eggs I had taken out from under the trio that were sharing eggs. I was not sure how long they had been there so I disinfected them and put them right into the incubator. In Hind sight, I think it is safe to say they were under the hens for three days.

I moved all the eggs marked for the 19th to the hatcher. I had planned to move them after the guinea eggs hatched. However, there is no sign of them hatching right now, so they are all in the hatcher. I need more 1202's...Like 4 more!

I hate having to open the hatcher on the day of the hatch but Judy gave me no choice. So I misted and shut it back up. I do not think it was open over a minute or that I lost much moisture....I hope.

BTW I am not sure what JJ gave me this time. One looks white, which is impossible, the other maybe a self blue, lilac or lavender. It is light colored but not yellow/white.

Several hours into my very first turkey hatch. Have 4 little Sweetgrass poults, with 6 eggs left to hatch (or not hatch). Hoping for at least a couple more.

My eggs were clearly marked the 19th. Today is the 16th. They had no business hatching today,

I have some due the 19th also but I didn't have time to lockdown today (story of my life). Hourly I get a chance tomorrow or I'm sure I'll be finding more poults in the bottom of my bator...again. We won't be home all day Saturday since my daughter's girl scout Troup if doing a zoo trip in Pittsburgh. There's no way I'll remember to pull them after that lol.

AWESOME!!!

CONGRATS ON YOUR FIRST HATCH!

Are these from your flock?

This is my flock, lol. I am fortunate in that I live very close to someone who breeds several varieties of heritage turkeys.

He has Black Mottled, Narragansett, Chocolate Slate, Chocolate, Chocolate Dapple, Chocolate Mottled, Red Slate, Holland White, and Sweetgrass.

I'm a hatchaholic and had never hatched any turkeys. Just thought I'd try these first.

Any recommendations on what I should try next?

It would be neat to have a neighbor that raises that many varieties.

I have 3 varieties that I can raise pure. Palms, bourbons, and chocolates.

I can't give a good recommendation on what to try next.

Honestly I would want to try them all. Lol.

I understand the hatchaholic part.

I have a few styro bators and every time I say I'm done I find more eggs to fill em back up.

I have saved back 16 poults so far out of hatching this year.

Good luck with your sweetgrass poults.

Here's a few of my group. They decided to follow me to the house when I let them out.

Ok as I had mentioned before my wife got some new Broad Breasted Bronze back in April, Mars raised them until she passed away, well when she died they were as hurt as any of us. One little Jake started trying to sleep on Mars' bed well now that I chased him outside with the chickens he has to come pick a fight with me everyday. I've watched turkeys enough to know how they fight and know it can get ugly, so anyway he comes up starts grabbing my fingers and what not so I tap the back of head with a finger and grab the scruff of his neck usually sends him into submission but this is an everyday thing.

Do you folks think he's mad at me for chasing him out with the chickens or is he still hurt by the loss of Mars (as I am) and lashing out?
