A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Feistychick, that brought a question to mind. What do y'all use for nestboxes. Size, material and elevation??

I just put a piece of plywood in their coop leaned against the wall. They're very happy with it and I keep having hens attempt to go broody. Speaking of which, Mary is contemplating broodiness :/

My son is doing Bourbon Red Turkeys as his 4-H project. The show is next Wednesday and he is selling a pen of 3 (1 male and 2 hens) the weight for a pen of 3 has to be no less than 36 lbs. Right now they are at 30 lbs. I am feeding them 30percent purina show chow and adding 8 oz of champion drive to 10 lbs. of feed. Any ideas on how I can get them to the 36lbs. Before next week?

6 pounds in less than a week.......2 pounds a bird. I would push the corn. Really push the corn, do not worry about protein right now, just push the calories and carbs.

Corn corn and more corn.........Also a few lead fishing weights would not hurt..

Don't forget to nominate four people by the end of this month!
--- NOMINATION SUBMISSION FORM ---

We are very excited to announce the Official Launch of Phase 2 of the BYC Award Program! Phase 2 is YOUR opportunity to recognize those outstanding BYC members that always enrich your BYC experience. Do you know a BYC member that is exceptional and always goes Above and Beyond in their commitment to their fellow BYC members and the BYC community? If so, we want to hear about them!

We are now accepting nominations from the Community for those individual Members that consistently demonstrate a commitment to excellence in one or more of the following areas:
  1. BYC Educator: This is a Staff awarded accolade. We have changed this award to reflect only the highest standards. Only those who adhere to the highest standards of knowledge and education will be considered for this award. While nominations will be accepted for this award, the Staff will thoroughly vet each person and only those who meet/exceed the Staff's high criteria will be awarded the Educator Badge. Nominees must, among other points, have a verifiable reputation of providing information more than just "common knowledge," assist members in a positive and courteous manner, be open to feedback without getting defensive, and should maintain their good standing with little disciplinary action for rules violation.
  2. BYC Friend: These individuals are just plain fun and great to have around! They are our favorite comedians and enablers; our most cluckative. They are always accessible to lend a cordial and helping hand. Their enthusiasm encourages us, their empathy comforts us.
  3. BYC Spirit: These individuals best demonstrate ALL-AROUND outstanding service and commitment to the BYC members and community. While maybe not expert educators, they are trusted Educators nonetheless, as well as Friends to all. They are dedicated to the BYC Community as a whole, and strive to help promote, support and uphold its values and goals.
  4. BYC Greeter: These individuals are our BYC "Welcome Wagon!" They are the members that are most active in welcoming the new members to our community, especially in the "New Member Introductions" forum. Nominees will be judged on a) How long they've been welcoming new members; b) How many new members they welcome; and c) The quality and friendliness of their welcome.

See all the awards here.

Hi, so I'm contemplating getting some North American wild turkeys and was wondering how they are best kept? I have 30 guineafowl that free range day and night but was wondering how the turkeys are in comparison to guineas, can they be allowed to free range like guineas or will they leave?

I have no idea, but if I talk to JJ's mistress I will ask her if I can send her illegitimate half breed babies to you..

Where I live I would be afraid to try a wild turkey that is not penned in. I know it would join the wild flocks in seconds.

How long has this flock been domesticated? If not long then consider the "Wild" part of their name. Turkeys fly, they are natural wanderers, and nosy. Their idea of free range may be different than yours.. Keep them penned and well fed for a few weeks. Let one or two out and see if they hang around or take off.

They are wild turkeys in the sense they arnt he domestic breeds, but they have been raised in an incubator and are not from actual wild birds, but they are of the same breeding of wild turkeys, I live in the uk so the only predator is a fox and there are no wild turkeys in the wild. So would they be safe to train to perch on a particular tree and let out 24 7 along with the guineas that also live semi feral. I keep the guineas in for a few months in a run before shutting them out the run so they go up into the tree above the run so I was hoping the turkeys would do the same

Ok I got a couple pics of my two mysteries and also one of my buff orpingtons. I think it's a rooster but have been told it could be a hen. Any input would be great. Thanks
