A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Hey all. Sorry I have been kind of absent, between the WWD's illness and getting ready for winter and the State Bird Show, I have been chasing my tail.

I lost 3 poults the other day to an owl. They were sitting to high up with their head near the bird netting. Stupid birds. I have moved them to a different pen where than can not get as close to the netting. I have them basically confined to the pen. They are problem children. They want to run out in the open pasture and chase grasshoppers. They are not smart enough or large enough to do it carefully and watch for eagles and hawks.

Yesterday, I had to chase them back into the yard 5 times. It takes from my work when I have to stop and go get them. I finally locked them up again. I was working in the shed on my show birds, pens and cages. Luckily I did not have to go check on the poults. One of the little slates (Ethel and JJ's kid, is a snitch. He hates to be alone and hates to go into the pasture. ( weird, I know) so whenever the other went into the pasture he comes into the shed I am working in and starts chirping and snitches the others out so I can go get them. Everyone should have a snitch Poult it is so handy.

Blue is about to become a caged turkey. I just need to put a few finishing touches on the cage and she is into it. She will be getting a bath and Pedicure this week. That should go well. I will be putting lotion on her shiny parts. I am thinking of using baby shampoo on them incase I get some in my eyes. I expect she will not take to the bath.

It has been so wet here my poults are pretty dirty, that is the reason I have not taken pictures. Also they are true turkeys if they are not chasing grasshoppers they sit in the rafters and on the shelfs in my pole barn/shed and give me advice on what I am doing. Having a flock of turkey is more like having a pack of dogs than a flock of chickens.

Ralph, neither of my hens mind a bath. In fact they like water. When i get my hose out the chickens scatter & the turkeys come running. They love the zero entry wading pool. The day i found Daisy she was covered in dried mud & poop. I had to give her a bath. She pretty much stood there. You need to take a glamour shot once she's been groomed.

When is this show? To show a turkey, dont you have to move them? You may want to practice with treats.

Speaking of rain, we've had none. Sure wish you could send some our way.....

There is no showmanship, it is simply the bird in a cage and a judge looking at and feeling the bird.

Is she by any chance an Ethel daughter? Maybe she'll talk her way into a blue ribbon!

Nope, not a chance.
