One possibility if the air cell isn't big enough (too much humidity prior to lockdown) the poult can get too big to properly move around in the shell preventing the ability to pip and causing suffocation due to lack of oxygen.
Another possibility is vents not being open enough during lockdown causing insufficient oxygen in the atmosphere. If you need to raise humidity for lockdown, always do so by increasing the surface area of the water and not by closing vents.
Possibility #3 is too high of humidity during lockdown. The higher the humidity is the lower the available oxygen is.

Interesting,
I run without the plugs in most the time I have a humidity between 20-30% The air sacs look big, but I am a novice.
I do not use the plugs during lock down at all, I have a sponge and the water channels for surface area.
I had a hard time getting the humidity up. I only got above 70 for maybe a half hour. Most the time I was between 40-60. I had a hard time staying above 50.
I will watch the humidity tighter next time. maybe use 2 sponges.
Thanks
Congrats on your new babies. I am sorry that your eggs did not hatch.I am completely in love with baby turkeys! I had to buy some yesterday.
Mine did not hatch, and upon the eggtopsy, I found they likely died before I left town. Or right after. I didn't think to take pictures.
So I came home with a blue, a chocolate, and a BBB (for Thanksgiving). I figure if the 2 keepers (the blue and chocolate) turn out to be jerks, I can always butcher. I don't believe that will even be a possibility though. They are the dang sweetest things!
They totally do care about people. They seem so much more socially motivated. And their awkward bodies and clumsiness is too much for me to take. I am completely smitten with the little creatures.
Tomahawk (the chocolate) and Banshee (the blue). Maybe we will have lavender babies! I vent sexed, and believe the chocolate is a male. But, who knows, I am not a professional by any means!
