A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I never thought about it like that but that is so true WalnutHill they really do! And come flying to you! I love me some turkey!

I have 5 eggs that did not even attempt to hatch, the poults looked fully developed. It is like they just gave up before even trying.

Any idea why?

Here are a couple pictures.

One possibility if the air cell isn't big enough (too much humidity prior to lockdown) the poult can get too big to properly move around in the shell preventing the ability to pip and causing suffocation due to lack of oxygen.

Another possibility is vents not being open enough during lockdown causing insufficient oxygen in the atmosphere. If you need to raise humidity for lockdown, always do so by increasing the surface area of the water and not by closing vents.

Possibility #3 is too high of humidity during lockdown. The higher the humidity is the lower the available oxygen is.

Interesting,

I run without the plugs in most the time I have a humidity between 20-30% The air sacs look big, but I am a novice.

I do not use the plugs during lock down at all, I have a sponge and the water channels for surface area.

I had a hard time getting the humidity up. I only got above 70 for maybe a half hour. Most the time I was between 40-60. I had a hard time staying above 50.

I will watch the humidity tighter next time. maybe use 2 sponges.

Thanks

If the air cells are too large that can also be a problem. If the membrane is so tight that it prevents them from reaching the shell to break it then they can not pip & zip to get out. Too low of humidity throughout seems to be more the problem.

I never use the chanels in the bator for water. I always put jars or bowls in & add as many as needed to reach desired humidity. Place 1/2 inch hardware cloth over the top of water containers to prevent drowning. With styro bators, I put 1 half pint jar in during incubation to get humidity between 30-40% & 3-4 jars in at lockdown to get humidity between 40-60% (no fans) depending on what I was hatching. With a fan you may need to go a little higher.

I am completely in love with baby turkeys! I had to buy some yesterday.

Mine did not hatch, and upon the eggtopsy, I found they likely died before I left town. Or right after. I didn't think to take pictures.

So I came home with a blue, a chocolate, and a BBB (for Thanksgiving). I figure if the 2 keepers (the blue and chocolate) turn out to be jerks, I can always butcher. I don't believe that will even be a possibility though. They are the dang sweetest things!
They totally do care about people. They seem so much more socially motivated. And their awkward bodies and clumsiness is too much for me to take. I am completely smitten with the little creatures.

Tomahawk (the chocolate) and Banshee (the blue). Maybe we will have lavender babies! I vent sexed, and believe the chocolate is a male. But, who knows, I am not a professional by any means!

I am in heaven today...I will be reminding my DW of what she said today for a year...

She said if I can get through hatching this year and want to do it next year, I can get a big fancy incubator! Sportsman 1202 here I come..

Grats on the turkeys, BUT I am so sad you did not get any JJ and Ethel kids...

I had a woman come and get eggs today and she got scared of JJ and asked if he would attack her. I called him and went and picked him up, petting him, he was gobbling and she started laughing so hard, saying " and I thought he was dangerous, he is just a big pussy cat"..JJ was insulted by this, he knows he is way better than any alley cat!

MM in honor of your becoming a turkey flock owner, I have decided to take the rest of the day/evening off and drink Mike's Hard Cranberry Lemonade in your honor, My DW is not as pleased with my choice of how to finish the day as I am, but who cares,,,CHEERS!

I am not sure if she is that unhappy with my decision or the fact I mentioned she had to go get more as I was almost out.

Congrats on your new babies. I am sorry that your eggs did not hatch.
