A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

When are you leaving? Who watches your birds when your gone?
They just mentioned something on the national news about a bunch of snow heading for Minnesota. I was running around getting ready for work so I didn't hear the whole thing. Hope bad weather doesn't interfere with your trip.

It usually snows only a little or it doesn't here. But we still have freezes here... don't step on the rocks or concrete! I put the turkeys up late last night and it was dark outside! But it turned out they where on the roof of the coop!!!! I put them up...

We were leaving Thursday, I am finishing my coffee, and headed out, I looked at the runs, the netting is down, I am hoping I can fix it.

There is a neighbor, that buys eggs from me, and wants some chickens next spring that is watching them when I am gone. That and crossed fingers.

My turkeys would be hard to part with.. They have been eating Wild game/show bird mixed with some cracked corn. I was feeding starter/corn & egg layer and starter also.. This was when they were up to about 4 weeks.. I got home one day and checked on my youngens. .. I found one of my turkeys died. I did some research and learned they don't process all that calcium well.. I then restricted the egg layer to the chickens, hand feeding those that want it. I feel bad because the turkeys seem to want it and grab what hits the ground.. I occasionally hand feed all of them some white bread... they are going on 5 months, free ranged most of the time, and I keep game starter and cracked corn in feeders.. I'm going to need to get larger feeders as they are going threw them pretty quick. What should I feed them now that they are about out of starter stage? Can I mix my layer in with the cracked corn again? Are they old enough to digest the calcium or should I get something else?

Hey Copper. ..looks like you need to tuck in your turkeys earlier so they don't fly to the top of coop. Mine are good....they head into the coop unprompted. But they are anticipating their bedtime treats!
What part of Texas are you in. We rarely get snow here, it's usually ice.

I am back in to have more COFFEE!!!

It is not as bad as it looked from the house. There is one pole where the netting broke through. I am going to put a T on it should take less than a half an hour to fix,

Ron, I would feed them Game Bird grower, That is what I use this time of the year. During the time of the year when they can graze and eat bugs they only get treats during "chicken TV time". They will sneak in and eat layer mash then, but it is such a small percentage of their feed.

Oh. ..sorry about the netting Ralph. Bummer. My bird sitter in two doors down and knows my birds pretty well. But when I'm gone I'm antsy. I hate leaving them.

Is that a bird/deer netting that you use to keep birds from flying out? If do you usually have good luck with it and snow?

No, that stuff you are talking about is way too light to hold up under a wind or even a light snow.

I use Game bird Netting, the same stuff the pheasant farms use to keep their birds in.

I buy it from Amazon. It comes in various sizes, 50x50. 10x100. 25x25 etc. It has about 2 inch weave to it and the netting is about 1/16th to 1/8 of an inch thick.
