A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Nice set ups folks! Chaos, can't wait to see the new girls.
Ralph, when is Gingers photo shoot?

The snow has everything delayed. They are so busy exploring the white stuff on the ground they do not have time to strut.
Hopefully tomorrow. I have carried the IPhone with me while plowing snow, but no one is acting photographic.

Yea...we got one right! I'm sure he thought Penguin was the cutest thing EVER!

He actually said " that worthless belly button is just a plain old rusty black piece of poop"

Whew. There was a lot to catch up on!

We are finally back home. I have a terrible cold. It is windy and freezing here.

The chickens all seem fine. I plan to clean out all the bedding in their coop and nesting boxes. I can't sterilize, but I don't know that it would do much good anyhow.
I have always put oregano oil in their water (works kind of like acv), but now I am going to add probiotics full time. They get yogurt here and there, but I think they all need a bit of a boost.

My turkeys are miserable. I guess they didn't go in the coop once while we were gone. They just wanted to come inside and have human contact. Even Lurkey Tomahawk.
I went outside today (we got home around 2 am last night) and I have never seen happier turkeys! The beeps and snuggles were just cracking me up.

So, while I have been away, we have learned Ralph has famous turkeys!
I wish so badly those eggs would have hatched!!!!!
My DH may have thought he was in the clear for divorce papers over the incubator mishap... he may not be, now that the babies could have been famous!

We also learned a completely genius way to keep water from freezing!
If we have a warm up, guess who is digging a 5 gallon hole?

I love all the pictures of everyone's run areas - getting lots of good ideas from those!

Chaos - I have been using my a-frame as a quarantine/baby area too, and it seems to work well. We also built 2 covered tractors that I'm hoping will also work for quarantine of larger birds.

MM - glad you are home, hope you can get rid of the cold you picked up. Isn't is so neat how much birds miss you while you are away??

Why are turkey genetics so much different than chicken genetics? A good example I came across was with Porters turkey calculator. If I have a Sweetgrass tomand I mate him to a royal palm hen I get Sweetgrass poults........huh? Hows that possible when only one of the parent stock is sweetgrass? Wouldnt the poults be half sweetgrass and half royal palm......instead of all sweetgrass?

Oh geez, freezing rain is the worst. We get ice more than snow here. But we are on the delta so it's pretty flat.

The bridge between Helena and Isle of Capri is tough on ice. Last year, I had to stay over an extra night because it and the ones in Memphis were all frozen... i heard the traffic was baf and there was an accedent on those in Memphis so I didnt even try... just stayed another night.. my nieghbor checked on my babies and fed them...

A royal palm is b1b1 cgcg ngng
So all babies would have b1b1 - one b1 from each parent
All babies would have cgcg a cg from each parent
Only the royal palm has the ngng so it can get only one ng, which will not show, because it needs 2, one from each parent.
