A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

It's good to know my turkeys are not the only ones that like water! When mine were poults they were with me almost all the time so when I went swimming in the pond they would follow me in and swim around like ducks! I just thought I had strange turkeys...

Memphis that picture is hilarious, once turkeys focus on one thing they can't seem to think of anything else!

You know, it's a good thing that Adam has 6 ladies all to himself. I think any less and he'd end up stripping every last feather from their backs. He has quite the insatiable drive! Just in the 10-15 minutes that I was out there with them, feeding them and loving them up, he successfully mated 3 of the girls and fell off 2 others attempting. He's a beast! He's having troubles getting Eve though. He keeps falling off of her because she won't let him mate her. She immediately squats for me, almost every time I touch her but the second Adam tries, she jumps up and he falls off lol.

Has anyone noticed any connection between young hens strutting and getting ready to lay? Two of my mated girls (Pebbles & Mary) were strutting this morning. I haven't seen them do that in months! Still waiting impatiently for eggs. The mating has really stepped up lately.

Turkey parents. ..I have a Bourbon Red, Annie, and a Blue Slate, Daisy.

Loz...your right. Once they are fixated it's hard to distract them. That's why Annie is "grounded" for now. Funny thing, Daisy could care less.

Aurora, Adam is a hoot! I think some of his behavior is driven by him being an adolescent tom. I bet with age he'll settle down a bit. Maybe! That's funny about Eve. The only time I've seen my girls strut is when they see something they perceive as dangerous. A hawk, new dog, person they've never met. Do turkeys have a pecking order like chickens? Maybe some of their displaying has something to do with that. Daisy is clearly the lead turkey here. Annie will defer to her over things like treats or my lap. They may be close go laying. I've gotten three eggs in the past week. Someone here is already incubating, can't remember who. I don't understand why mine all of a sudden started to lay again.

Maybe Adam knows better than us! Or maybe he's just taking advantage when he can! Getting a little practice under his belt!!
My male dogs can tell when a ***** is coming into heat about a month prior to her actually coming in.

Turkey Parents, go to Porters Heritage Turkeys and check out all the great heritage turkey varieties. Daisy, the Slate Blue, is a wonderful hen! Several of us have the blues. I know R2elk raises Blue Slates and Ralphie has a whole calico flock with a bunch of blue variations.
Speaking of Ralph, I'm thinking of putting out an APP on him with the Minnesota thread.
