So, Sonja in Colorado is reporting her hen just layer an egg. I'm kind of keeping tabs here...but we now have folks in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, New Mexico & Colorado getting turkey eggs. Anybody else have hens laying in December? Just kind of finding this interesting.

I wish Big Bird would lay me a turkey egg... maybe closer to spring :) She's still under 5 months so I probably have a bit of a wait yet lol. My broody chicken is now sitting on a little clutch and we'll see how that goes. It will be nice to learn a bit about broodies with chickens before I get a broody turkey - I suspect that a growly turkey is not as easy to handle :p

Turkeys are like turkeys when they go broody. I have had some that seem to ignore me, Some that pretend I am not there. Some do not care. AND I had one crazy mother that attacked me and tried beating the poop out of me with her wings and claws!

You would not believe a turkey could look so big and attack so hard.. She be crazy!

I was playing with the calculator again.

Ginger is out, I think. I found by breeding the red blue bronze with JJ (line breeding) I get 17 different type of poults! I will increase my chances of a calico flock just breeding JJ. to all the hens. Everyone else is out of luck this year.

My crazy Midget White youngsters started laying last August and have not stopped since. Usually an egg or 2 every day - they lay better than many of the chickens! They started when about 6 months of age, too, I wish my chickens were so consistent. This past week I started getting eggs from the young Black Mottled or Royal Palm hens, not as consistent as the MW's, but earlier than I was expecting from them.

Maybe it's the spring-like temps we have been having.

Thanks dheltzel....I think your about the third person from PA I've heard of who has hens laying. I guess it could be the wacky weather but I thought laying had more to do with lighting. Still just curious about the fact so many of us across the country have hens laying right now. Of course I think Pebbles forced herself to lay only because she knew her mom (Aurora) wanted eggs so bad! ;)

Dheltzel. ..post some pictures. Would love to see your mottled black.

Ralph...was looking over the latest JJ list. Geez! I'm thinking a Slate Edge Bourbon Red would be amazing! You may want to set up your breeding pens. Sounds like a lot of girls are laying early & Penguin is on the loose!

Ralph...how about a new sales pitch...buy a Creamette - get a free turkey.

The one with the most distintive markings is the hen I call "Momma Turkey" (she is the oldest of this group and the mother of all of the mottled and RP's). She is from Porters and will be 3 this spring and true to the description, is getting more white with each molt. The other 2 hens are her daughters and I think they might be "mottled silver dappled", she has 2 other daughters that are clearly pure black mottleds. All the younger ones were sired by a Royal Palm that has since passed, but you can see his sons in this next pic.

Pure white ones are Midget Whites, the others are sons of Momma Turkey and a RP I got locally. The black tom is patterned like the 2 hens that look like mottled silver dapples. His is to be my main breeder male in 2016. I like the mottleds and the silver dappled ones a lot. My favorite is one of those MSD hens that I named Clarice (after the doe-eyed mate of Rudoph). She is very attached to me and seeks out my company whenever I show up. I think it miffs the toms somewhat, but they seem willing to take advantage of her infatuation with me and the black tom is quite tame also and moves in quickly when Clarice starts coming on to me.

Turkeys are so much fun!
