A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Holm was the one who said he had a harness for his turkey. Wonder where he got it. Maybe you can trade him a turkey for it. :)

Aurora, your going to have babies everywhere! :p. What fun!

More proof Penguin is a Belly Button.

I took "treats" out for the turkeys, it is a little early but we are going shopping.

The chickens saw me grab the treats so they decided to follow too. Meaning I had to chase the chickens out of the turkey pen, while keeping the turkeys in. A big PITA!

Vlad a little red chicken refused to leave, I had to lure her out. After about 5 minutes of confusion I had them where they belonged and locked the gate. I turned around, and there was Penguin in the chicken pen! I decided to just go carry him to the turkey pen. Penguin as a typical belly button does not like to be caught.

I tried to chase him into a corner and wrap my arms around him. He did not go along with this plan. He would fight, fly an run to another corner. He was squawking like he was hurt. He wasn't. Blackie the rooster that Penguin is always picking on and chasing heard Penguin crying and saw me chasing penguin.

Blackie decided this was his chance to get a few licks on Penguin. So now I have a turkey that doesn't want to be caught, fighting me, a rooster that wants to gore the crap out of Penguin fighting in the corner. I finally got Penguin held to the ground and picked Penguin up.

This was not good enough for Blackie, like a kid that has been bullied too long he was going to get a few more good hits in. I am trying to lift and carry Penguin, Blackie is jumping and flying at him. I carried Penguin out of the chicken pen, Blackie right along side me, puffing his chest like he has done a marvelous feat of strength and bravery.

It was a mess. BUT I got Penguin thrown into the right pen, Blackie went home with a little more bounce in his step, I was beat and needed a drink...

I totally need a turkey harnass - and yes Ralph, I'm sure they are worth more if they are harness-broken ;) It is an interesting thought... road tripping with turkeys lol.

Ralph - that sounds like an ordeal this afternoon, and you definitely earned a drink (or two). Sounds like Blackie got a few revenge licks in and is feeling pretty proud of himself!

Aurora - you are going to be knee-deep in babies soon :) So jealous of all the little peeps you'll be having soon!

I'm letting my broody orpington sit on eggs now - she's been sitting tight, so maybe I'll end up with babies in 20 or so days. This may help me resist the temptation of buying an incubator for a little longer :) Baby peeps :love The timing could be better, but they should be hatched before I go on my trip. Maybe she'll be broody again in the summer, when it's more hospitable and easier to enjoy the littles.....

I will post pictures of all the babies when they're here. Most of them will be sold as most of them are mixes but I'll be growing out the Marans, any lavender ameraucanas I may get, andhopefully 2 toms for Thanksgiving and Christmas next year.

Ralphie, Blackie thought you were trying to kill Penguin and wanted to help. Pack mental. :D. That sounds like quite the tussle! You could have used the opportunity to sit with Penguin in your lap & bond....:lau

Fiesty...what do you have under your broody?

Wonder if Chaos has set anything yet....

Wow Dheltzel! I love Moma! She's gorgeous, and so are her babies!
You've seen our sliding Turkey Temperament Scale? Sounds like Clarice is a Lapper!
Are you setting up breeding pens already, since the girls are laying? Do you incubate of let the girls brood?
Thanks for the pictures. Seriously beautiful flock!

Yes, I suppose that would describe Clarice. I was in a hurry today when I went to care for the turkeys, but Clarice was calling for me so I had to pause and let her snuggle into my arms for a bit. I don't know how long she would stay like that, I've always been the one in a hurry, she's not.

I tried letting 2 of the MW's brood a batch last month, but nothing hatched. I mostly incubate, but I hope to let one hen hatch some this year, just for the fun of it.

Adam had a roughly 2 day journey to get to me and he food fine

I just requested to join Porter's turkey genetics Facebook page. I'm going to post pictures of Pebbles and Sweet Pea and make sure that they're really bronze and red bronze. If they're different than I think, I'll need to run the calculator again lol.

It turns out that I've ordered too many eggs for my incubator to hold so I'm going to have to fire up my hatcher early and transfer some eggs to it a bit early. Especially since I'm going to be hatching all my turkey eggs lol. I have 4 turkey eggs gathered so far but I'm waiting until next weekend to set them (next Sunday I think)

You need a larger incubator. I can help you build one!

2 eggs in 1 day?

All of you with egg laying turkeys have me in a quandary. I am jealous of you, but I am not sure I want my Turkey hen to start laying now. My worry is they will stop laying before I want them too if they start now?

Are you supplementing calcium now?
Sorry for the confusion - I have 8 MW hens (and 1 tom) in that breeding pen. 1 to 2 eggs a day since August is impressive to me, though I hope they don't stop laying early also, I'd rather have eggs to incubate in February than in Dec, but I'll take them whenever.

My other turkey breeding pen has the Mottleds and Royal Palms, since they interbreed nicely. There is also a MW tom in there, but I don't think he's getting any action, so I expect the poults to be fathered by one of the mottleds or the RP.

I keep a feeder with oyster shell for them to eat as they wish.
