A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I've been trying to just read what everyone else has to say for awhile. Plus Mars has been a little extra clingy lately, hasn't let me go from one room to another without being on my heels

Woah Ralph isn't it passed your bed time

My turkeys and chickens get along fine. However, every time a new one comes in there is a few skirmishes until the pecking order is realigned.

Hen turkeys are not very aggressive, or at least mine aren't.

What kind of white turkey? Are you talking about a broad breasted turkey?  Is it HUGE?

Welcome to the fun! You will learn very quickly that turkeys are so much more affectionate and silly than chickens. They tend to be sweet and if you spend some time with her, she'll probably come to sit on your lap for some attention. One of my hens gets REALLY excited if you sit down and tap your lap. She'll come RUNNING to hop up lol.

As for housing, for a single turkey, a 15 sq ft house with a 2 x 6 laid flat for a roost is probably about minimum size. You want to give her a good bit of run space. Turkeys LOVE to be outside. They can fly too but if she's a broad breasted, she most likely wouldn't really be able to.

My nest boxes in my coop are just pieces of plywood, leaned against the wall in a corner. Only a few of my girls use them though. You'll find that turkeys do their own thing, not necessarily what you want them to do lol.

I like all the info and suggestions. We have a large 3-part enclosure 30'x30' for chickens, and could close off a 10'x30' section for her, and add a roomy house at one end. How high off ground should house be? Can she navigate a ramp? Will take a photo Monday.

I don't think she could have crossed busy highway and made it 1/2 mile down lane to farm by herself... This isn't the first drop-off we've had. Just hope coyotes, Bobcats and raccoons don't get to her. Our bigger animals can fight back but poultry don't have much of a chance without secure enclosure.

Morning all. Uggg....rain expected all day today. Then the cold front rolls in. Our lows are expected to be in the 20's. I know. ...that's nothing compared to most of you, I'm just a whimp!

Annie has become a squirrel chaser. I have a pecan grove in their yard. Squirrels are the bane of my existence. Rats with tails. Annie has decided she likes chasing them back up into the trees. I'm loving it!

Justdishy....did you decide she's a broad breasted turkey?
