How many thermometers do you guys use in your incubators?

Do you use wired ones? Wireless? internal ?

I use wired and wireless both, now that I have my girlie one that is certified accurate. I put the target temp on each thermometer. I am finding the ones with the wired probes hold better accuracy than the wireless ones?

Has any one else found that? Do the wireless eat batteries faster and lose accuracy because of that?

I always use at least 2 in each incubator. The only one that's like a probe is the one that goes in my cabinet bator. I have a wireless one in there too but I know it's off by a degree or two. I need to get one of those certified accurate ones.

This question is for R2elk!!!

I have opened the box for my herpstat 1.

Do I need to rewire the heating element with a 120v plug on it?

If I just plug the whole unit into the herpstat the fan will stop when it is not calling for heat, correct?

I need the fan to run all the time, don't I?

Is there a fuse in it as it comes from the factory? I do not want to risk prying that little fuse box open and breaking something if I do not need too..

Thanks

I separated the fan and turner from the heating element and wired them to a 120v switch which is wired to a plug so I wouldn't have to pull the plug to turn it off.

The heating element is wired to a 120v plug which passes through the top of the incubator and plugs into the Herpstat. You can't have the fan or turner attached to the Herpstat since they need to run constantly. I left the high temp wafer in the system. The Herpstat was used to replace the front wafer (in my case the electronic controller).

I removed the top of the incubator to access the rear chamber in order to separate the heating element and controller from the electrical supply to the fan and auto-turner. You can accomplish the same thing by removing the back of the incubator. I cannot provide any images of the change in wiring in the back compartment because I did not take any photos at the time and do not feel like opening up the back section again.

Hope this is helpful to you. The on/off switch is not necessary but I like it better than having to pull the plug to shut the unit off. For the Spyder controller I just unplug the electric cord from the back of the controller when I am not using it. I always turn the fan on before I plug the cord back into the controller.

The same can be accomplished much cheaper by using the STC-1000 rather than the Spyder controller. The Spyder controller does allow you to apply an offset to the temperature probe's reading . I found my probe reading to be approximately 0.3°F low so I am using their temperature adjustment to keep the temperature right on the money.

Good luck.

Thanks R2elk,

That explains a lot. I went down and looked at the case with your instructions and it makes sense. That was kind of my thought, I was going to do it slightly different, but I like your way better.

I will leave the back thermostat in even though the herpstat as a high temp limiter.

I let the turkeys out today, they are so mellow and sweet it is unbelievable. I think Ginger and Penguin were causing more grief than I even thought.

I have picked out the tom I will keep to mate with the self blues, I have a larger blue that looks like he will get sidekick size in another year. I will give him 2-3 hens.

Sort of like that with dogs. Get one bellybutton and the whole kennel can get bazerk. Did Ethel get out too? Or is she hanging with the chickens? So how many turkey breeding pens will you end up with? I'm loosing track......
