A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Very weird experience today, and one I hope not to repeat, EVER. I was happily weeding a flower bed near the back pond and a mature bald eagle flew overhead really low, which is unusual. It banked in right front of me and flew back over the house, and then I watched it dive into the front yard. I have never seen bald eagles in our front yard, it's congested with fruit and nut trees and not good for diving into. I heard a strange noise and started running to see what was going on - btw, sprinting 150 yds in rubber boots on soggy ground sucks. I got around the house and saw two mature bald eagles about 10 ft apart on the driveway and my cat in between them. Good god those things are big, Bones who is about 12 lbs looked puny between them. They were totally working together and stalking him. So I went racing down the driveway like a madwoman and as I approached I threw my little gardening spade at them. They flew about 20 ft away and landed on the barn looking into the runs....and then the birds went nuts! I grabbed the cat who had the good sense to stay put, threw him in the house and yelled for DH to get outside and help me deter a predator or two. What a freaking racket those turkeys make when there are predators so close! After giving the eagles some incentive to make a speedy departure, it took quite a while for the birds to chill out again. I am very grateful that we took the extra time to criss-cross wire over the top of the birds' run areas and that we didn't lose the cat today, grrrr - stupid eagles!

Yipee! How many more to go? Are all the girls sold?

Saw the pics Coffee posted. The dog cracked me up! They sure are cute. But just wait till she gets her turkeys!!!!!!

I have every hen sold for next 3 weeks I think.

The eggs I am putting in tonight are sold already!! I think it is because I am so cheap on the prices. I am selling them at 9 bucks online they are 30 plus. Eggs are 6 apiece! wow....

I am almost giving the roosters away at 5. The one place on line was 33 with a minimum order of 20!

We had a small cat when we moved here, about 8 pounds. We lost her one morning, we think the eagles got her.

I know they get a lot of my birds.. I despise them! Glad everything worked out.

I love eagles!! They flew over today so we went and fed them. We give them fish scraps. They love them. I think thats why they leave the poultry alone.

We have a 1 acre pond that is full of fish - they occasionally eat there, but I've never seen them hunt elsewhere on our property. I love taking pictures of the eagles - but would prefer it be somewhere other than here :)

I still hate Eagles. They hunt no where but here!

I like the ravens, they keep the eagles and hawks away, but they have been gone for a couple weeks. I hope they hurry and get back here.

I took the big chance tonight. I put 21 Creamette eggs and 3 toad eggs in the BIG incubator. It has been running for several days and seems to run fine, so it was time to try it.

I had to throw two eggs, a toad egg that had froze and cracked and a creamette egg that had a detached air sac and a bunch of stuff in it. Looked gross, I will open them tomorrow to see what I saw through the shell. A learning experience.

Wow, I'm glad you managed to get to everyone before disaster struck! I love eagles, always have but they better never come after my critters!

My big incubator has been running like a champ for the past couple weeks. I've found that without a window in the door, I'm less tempted to candle which I'm notorious for doing. I set about 20 more eggs on Friday. It's nice now. I finally got some egg trays in the mail and they hold so many more eggs than my homemade ones lol. I'm really thrilled with how stable the temps hold and the air cells look great on everything so the humidity must be just right.

As for my hatching poults, I came home from my parents to see that 2 more hatched while we were away today. That brings us up to 6 so far. At least 4 look like red bronze and one is really blonde lol. There are 6 more eggs in the bator that are pipped. That leaves 2 left without any outward signs. I think one may be a quitter. It didn't look right at lockdown and I haven't seen any movement from it. The other, I did listen to a little bit ago. It may not be pipped yet but it's scratching around in the egg :) these were the first eggs to be in the big bator. They didn't start there but they've been in it for at least 2 weeks.

Fiesty...that's scary. The cat was lucky you saw what was happening. We have eagles a bit north of here. Glad they don't visit down here. Have enough issues with hawks.
