Very weird experience today, and one I hope not to repeat, EVER. I was happily weeding a flower bed near the back pond and a mature bald eagle flew overhead really low, which is unusual. It banked in right front of me and flew back over the house, and then I watched it dive into the front yard. I have never seen bald eagles in our front yard, it's congested with fruit and nut trees and not good for diving into. I heard a strange noise and started running to see what was going on - btw, sprinting 150 yds in rubber boots on soggy ground sucks. I got around the house and saw two mature bald eagles about 10 ft apart on the driveway and my cat in between them. Good god those things are big, Bones who is about 12 lbs looked puny between them. They were totally working together and stalking him. So I went racing down the driveway like a madwoman and as I approached I threw my little gardening spade at them. They flew about 20 ft away and landed on the barn looking into the runs....and then the birds went nuts! I grabbed the cat who had the good sense to stay put, threw him in the house and yelled for DH to get outside and help me deter a predator or two. What a freaking racket those turkeys make when there are predators so close! After giving the eagles some incentive to make a speedy departure, it took quite a while for the birds to chill out again. I am very grateful that we took the extra time to criss-cross wire over the top of the birds' run areas and that we didn't lose the cat today, grrrr - stupid eagles!
