A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Ralph - wow, that is quite the list of turkey colors from one pair :)

Well, the lady didn't show up to pick up my boy last night. I thought it was a bit weird because she contacted me again the other day about him. Said she wanted him and was coming up. Oh well - I'll continue looking for a home for him......good thing I wasn't in a hurry lol! Big Bird seems pretty happy living with the chicken hens and I wasn't worried about breeding her. The boys haven't been fighting since I moved her out of their space - so can continue my hunt for a new home in relative peace

That is no longer the case. Kevin Porter imported some eggs from Australia with the sl gene. He has pictures of the hatch on the genetics FB page. They look like self blues. He is going to be breeding them for several years before they are sold to others. He is experimenting with the gene and trying to find differences in the slsl and the DD self blues.

He says right now they appear to look more like dilute self blues, that self blues but the poults are only a few weeks old. He says he is doing other things with them, but is very hush hush about what.

He also imported a spotted or painted turkey. He is trying to revive a Nebraskan or make one close to it. As I recall the last Nebraskan was in the 1930's. (from memory so could be way off)..

Memphis as R2elk says the only way to tell what a turkey has without DNA testing is to see if it gives the predicted offspring with a known DNA mate...

Dang, I feel like I am turning into a turkey DNA geek.

So to reword it, if you live in North America and your name isn't Kevin Porter you need not be concerned about the recessive slate gene at this time.

This is so much fun! Yes Ralph, your a genetics geek! Thanks for the clarification R2elk.

I still think Ralph needs a few Sweetgrass hens. Just saying......

I am on my way to genetics geek!! I have started memorizing genotypes and the birds that go with them!! I know the Royal palms, Fall fire, Bourbon red and the Calicos.
