A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Its her only wound. And while its bad, she doesn't seem to fazed by it other than a slight limp. I've got her confined to a very small area to limit movement and to keep the wound as clean as possible. He doesn't hardly have spurs yet, so I'm guessing the combination of his weight and clumsiness caused his claws to do that. There are a couple single poke holes just above the cut as well, as if from his other claws.

Initially, I didn't intend to breed BB, just the heritage bronze. I bought two that weren't supposed to be BB, hoping for a male and female, and two BB whites for eating. Well, the bronzes both ended up being BB and male, and one of the whites a female. Now after having raised four turkeys to adulthood, I am realizing I just don't have the space I need to keep the hens separate from the toms. I have decided to keep my hen since she's slimmed up and is very active, and seems to be a good layer. The tom just keeps getting bigger and is starting to have difficulty moving around, but he still manages to wander the property. I didn't really think they were breeding as she was actively avoiding him, so I didn't separate them. But now that I know they are, I'm looking to find him a new home, or send him to freezer camp with his buddies. He's such a cool turkey, but I just don't have the room to build another pen at the moment.

My recommendation is to get some Blu-Kote and spray her wound with it. You may already know this but broad breasted turkeys were developed strictly for use as food. They do not have a long life span like the heritage turkeys can have.

Hey all,
I am getting my frist turkey next week:weee a quad of 2+ year old Burbon Reds.

They will be kept in a 6x8 Quarantine pen for about thirty days. While they are in there I will be building out the coop & run.

Question is an 8 x 10 coop with an 8 x 20 run large enough for 4 birds?

Thanks

Yay! Congrats! You're going to love them :)

I have 7 and they have a 10 x 14 coop. They actualy don't have a run and there are days where I can't let them out to free range for one reason or another but they fare well. They have a light in there, a table to climb on or under, 2 nests, their roost and poop board that they love climbing on and their window that they stare out. They even have a board that runs around the entire inside perimeter of the coop, about 3-4 feet off the ground that they can get up on. This summer, we're putting in a huge window for them on the one wall since they love looking out the window so much. Plus, it'll help with ventilation.

Thanks. I am super excited. They are stunning birds.

In the coop/run I am planning the will have a total of 60sf per bird, 20 in the coop and 40 in the run.

I will let them free range... but not before I have babies on the ground.

Horrible picture but Sarah has officially gone broody and is sharing the nest with Pebbles but unlike Pebbles, she DOES bite! She basically coiled up like a snake and snapped at me. Thankfully, she got my coat, not my hand. I'll have to be extra careful when collecting eggs. I wonder if the girls will share chicks?

I have 10 chocolates, 2 lavenders, and 2 mottled blacks in the incubator. I only actually ordered 8 eggs so getting 14 was a thrill. I plan to keep a few for Thanksgiving and likely sell the rest. My shed that I've ordered for their coop is coming tomorrow and I'll be putting it together this weekend. It will be a 4' x 6' Keter Manor shed. In addition, they will be in a 22' x 40' run with 12 chickens who have their own coops. How many turkeys would be wise to keep in this set up?

They can strike very quickly. It is prudent to wear a coat and gloves.

Nest sharing doesn't usually work out well. The wrangling over the poults often ends with squashed poults. Also since you are not separating them from the tom, he will take advantage of them laying down and assume that is permission to attempt to breed them. This frequently results in smashed eggs and injured hens.
