A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

When I change water and add feed to the youngest poults they all run away from me, except Squeaky aka JJ jr. he comes running to be held. I had no choice but to bring him into the house last night where Judy preceded to spoil him rotten.

I am not sure how he will ever grow up normal if she interferes with my turkey raising...

Desertmacy....what cuties!

Ralphie...who needs normal when you have a lapper in training? Would love some pics of Squeaky JJ...

I'm curious, what are y'all raising the turkeys for? Mine or the result of an OCD flare up. I like birds, always have.

They are really interesting birds plus they taste great! I started raising them, along with chickens, because I didn't want to support factory farming. We don't eat red meat, so the poultry and eggs are our main protein source. One thing led to another, I got interested in standard bred chickens and showing, so out when all the hatchery stock. I would like to show more of my turkeys but transport is a problem. I made a goal to be the largest heritage turkey breeder in Arizona and have met that goal for sure! I keep adding new varieties, in the meantime, cut back on chicken breeds. I like the turkeys a lot better!

JR-we started with turkeys as a way to produce our own thanksgiving and have a continuous supply each year. We never expected to love them ship much! We do still eat a couple each year but there are special ones that get to stay and live on. They're my special cuddle buddies (Eve and Cuddles) :)

Coconut is acting weird today. Usually he struts around all day long, with the rare break to lay down. Today he has spent almost all of his time laying under the baby coop.

In fact, he wasn't in his normal sleeping spot last night, and this is where I finally found him. And I couldn't make him get out, so he had to be locked in there all night. He came out for a while in the morning and then went back in. This is so unusual for him, that I'm wondering if I should be worried.

Finnie, i sure hope Coconut is ok. Have you had a chance to examine him?

JR...what amazes me is how many of us would choose our turkeys over our chickens, if forbid, we had too. They are so engaging.

I played a neat game tonight. Find the hen. I searched for about 30-40 minutes before my friend came and helped. About 30 minutes later, I found her at the back of the pasture. Debbie had already looked there a few minutes before. She was really tucked in. I haven't brought the tom over, so eggs aren't fertile. Plus, it's too hot for sitting. I carried her in after throwing the eggs over the fence. I had found another nest earlier in the hunt and another place with shell fragments. Debbie thinks I should put GPS trackers on them.

So my poults are doing well and are both total lap birds. One is feathering in in different color tones than the other so I'm wondering if I have two different color varieties (they're narragansetts).

As of late they've taken to occasionally fighting. They kind of try to circle around each other and peck each other in the head, with a lot of chest bumping thrown in. It never gets especially violent and they never actually wound each other. Is this normal behavior?
