A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Fiesty...all my turkeys & chickens are molting now. Last year it was Nov./Dec when they started. The difference in molt timing is interesting. Anybody have any ideas why its so much earlier this year?

Heck, I'm just confused with how many times a turkey molts per year lol. All of mine have molted in early spring and are molting now!

Bantam sorry you had to do them, we're trying to convince ourselves to do the two BBB toms we have but not sure we can. They are quite the characters they will never be Mars or Jupiter quality but they are still like our kids

Mine are molting too, though I've only had them for a year so I don't know when they would normally molt. My chickens usually molt this time of year.

Everyone who has either been around BYC or had turkeys for any length of time knows this but I have witnessed just how different BB and heritage birds are especially when it comes to temperature tolerance. My three heritage birds handle the 90+ degree days better than even me and my wife, our two BBB are panting even at 70 degrees. I'm sorry to bring it up, but I've been learning more and more about them just from watching them

Well, yesterday, we tore down the kids' frame pool that we had up. It was just a $100 pool that we got on sale at the beginning of last summer. Long story short, I broke the filter and the pool got a leak. I guess they're not really made for the long term. Anyway, I convinced my husband to let me keep the entire frame setup for it to use as a big outdoor playpen for chicks/poults next spring. All I have to do is pick up a roll of chicken wire to zip tie around it and some bird netting to put over the top. They'll be able to go out on the grass and play with plenty of room. The pool was 14 ft in diameter and 4 ft deep so that will give them just over 150 sq ft of playroom and lots of heads pace to practice flying as the get bigger. In my mind, a wonderful way to recycle :) We also saved the pump to the filter to use for hydroponics :)
