A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

No snow, please! It's beautiful to look at but I get so cold. I'm in no way ready for it. The only good thing about it this year is that we got a 4-wheeler so we have something to play with in it lol

If you get any real amount of snow a 4-wheeler is useless in it. It does make a decent plow though. I use it for the lighter snowfalls.

Snow....its still in the 90's down here. It is warmer than usual for this time of year. I'm ready for a break from this heat.

Ralphie....I think its wonderful that you provide an indoor space so your turkeys can get out of inclement weather. How nice for them!

The turkeys have their own "indoor: space to sleep in. They just do not think it is large enough for them. They prefer the pole barn with high rafter and all my stuff to crap on. They hang out in it all day long. They barely go outside to eat. The Porter poults have even corrupted my 5 poults of JJ and Ethels!

The 4 wheeler is just for play. I feel certain that the kids will have a well packed path throughout the yard and woods, no matter how much snow falls. I know they'll be out there every day lol. We use the tractor for the plow.

No "Other Fowl" calendar this year? Bummer.

Sounds like the turkeys have made their decision. Ralph, your just going to have to convert the pole barn to the Turkey Townhouse.

I have decided this thread deserves a title...so

Why no one should buy Porter Turkeys!

While it is true Porter has some beautiful birds, and they are top quality or pretty darn close to it. They are stupid ornery and will lead the good turkeys astray.

They all spent the night high in the rafters of the pole barn. This morning they came down. They did not have the decency to hold their poop over night. I have turkey poop over everything. When they came down they decided to feed in the "treat tank".

I have a 150 gallon tank I keep my sunflowers, corn, millet and oats in. They decided that was their breakfast buffet. Turkeys from my eggs have never been so poorly mannered. They never sit in the rafters. They never poop at night. And they surely have better manners than to eat treats for breakfast.

After breakfast, I told them to go get lost and not come back into the shed. They left. Around Noon I noticed them walking kitty-corner across the 40 in the far corner. They were about to enter the "public hunting area" of the federal wildlife refuge. ( I know an oxy-moron, a public hunting area in a wildlife refuge). I have seen the type of people that hunt out there. They were not safe!

I ran on my old crippled legs to get in front of them and turn them around. I got them turned around and headed them back to their pen. There were 18 when I left out there. 3 of my own birds were too well mannered to go with Porter's turkeys. The "grass" and I use that word loosely, is tall and thick across my field. Had I not seen them on the field road crossing into the refuge I would have never seen them. I did my best to best to chase them back to their pen. When I got back to the pen, I was down to 13 birds.

5 were real stupid PITA's. Sometime during the walk back they turned around and went back to the pubic hunting area. I had to go back and find them, on my old crippled legs, which are now covered in sand burrs and beggar lice. Every step hurt. The Porter turkeys did not care! When I finally caught up to them they refused to turn around. They tried to keep going into the "refuge" claiming they were chasing grasshoppers. I know they were lying. I have as many grasshoppers on my land or more than the Feds have on theirs.

It took me over an hour to get all of them back to their pen. I have now locked them in. They will be spending the night in their little coop and not my shed, I may never let them out again. Porter turkeys are just to stupid and uncaring about by needs to ever be free again.

I will not even go into the number of Hawks, Eagles and fur bearing critters in the wildlife area that will munch on turkeys, that would require thinking turkeys. Porter turkeys have no common sense and do not think!

'Tis the season for lots of crane flies, so the birds ranged more of the property than usual today. Big Bird was barking at the end of the pond, so we went to see what had her so upset.... It was a bullfrog and it paid absolutely no attention to how loud she was yelling at it  She is apparently not tolerant of other species lol.

All turkeys "poop" when they are on the roosts. It is a proven fact and turkeys from your own eggs are no different than any other turkeys in that act.

My turkeys from Porter's Sweetgrass eggs do not act like your Porter's turkeys. One tom is a little on the slow side but the other tom is really well behaved and appears to be intelligent for a turkey. The hen is always well behaved and hangs very close to her adopted mother. The main difference that I see is that yours were hand raised and mine were given to a turkey hen to raise when they were two weeks old.
