A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Good morning folks!

For some reason, I can't get porters calculator to work for me on my computer, someone has some poults about an hour from us that are a Royal Palm (Tom) x Bronze (Hen), does anyone have possible pictures? :p

Morning.

You need to use firefox to get it to work right, or I do.

These are what you would get:

50 Male Bronze Semi-Color Semi-Gray
50 Female NarragansettSemi-Color Semi-Gray

Finnie...did you have both parents? I'm thinking her mom was not 100% sweetgrass. Could she have been a calico? Either way, Cornbread is a heauty!

Unfortunately, the mother got eaten by a coyote. :( And while I have many pictures of her as a poult, I have very few adult ones. She's not a calico, but I did some more digging, and I think she very well could have been what Porter has listed as a "Cornish Palm". That has the same genetics as a Sweetgrass, but missing one of the cg genes. (b'b' Ccg instead of b'b' cgcg)

AND, that would explain why the breeder was getting half "dark sweetgrass" and half "light sweetgrass" babies. Mine was one of the darks.

And I also looked up what she could make with Coconut, my royal palm tom, if she was a b'b'Ccg, and the results make female babies that were either royal palm or black winged Narragansett, so that's right in line with what I got. I only hatched out three of their chicks, and two were like Cornbread and one was definitely a royal palm. Boys would be either Cornish palms or sweetgrass, but I guess I didn't get any boys.

Here is the picture of the Cornish Palm that comes up on their calculator. (But I got it off Google images, since I found it there easier):

And here are what measly pictures I have of Poppyseed, my deceased supposed sweetgrass mother turkey:

(She is the brown one, the lighter one is my narri hen.)

So the breeder I got her from got his stock from Porter's and kept them separate so his Sweetgrass would stay pure. But I guess I wouldn't be too surprised if Porter's somehow got him some that were missing one of the cg genes.

How old are the poults?  Cuz if they are young, they should just look like generic color poults.  You can tell the narris from the bronzes when they get their feathers in and they get a little bigger.

Yeah, right now they look the generic poults, I'm excited to see what they end up looking like :)

Ralphie I am really questioning Mr. T lately... I have been thinking lately and am wondering if he isn't sterile? Because now that I think of it I haven't had any fertile eggs from my heritage hens he was with either. Do you think he could be sterile? I wondering if they can do a BSE on a turkey

Do you have a microscope? Look for yourself and see if he has swimmers, it will not tell everything but give you an idea.

Just my opinion but I do not believe that Poppyseed is a Sweetgrass. I have dark Sweetgrass and a light Sweetgrass from Porter's eggs and they are nowhere near as dark as your Poppyseed.

Good luck trying to figure it out.

Thank you @R2elk I think you are right about Poppyseed.

I would really love to see photos of both your dark and light Sweetgrass. Someday I hope to have real ones. :)

I'd like to see pics of your sweetgrass too R2elk! :D

Ralph, yours too. And Aurora, i know Romeo must be all grown up by now!
