Hey all got a quick question- what does frost bite look like on a chickens comb or feet? Have one of our buff orps that has pretty dark pink-red on her feet like between toes and down a line on each leg. Other buff is the same but they weren't like that before cold spell hit. And one of them has a black patch on her comb. Tried to get a good pic of them but they wouldn't be still long enough.

Oh also is it normal for the turkeys to shiver? They act ok like normal but will stand on one leg -switch legs not just holding the same leg up- an will be shivering. They have nice full feathering and will puff them up fine. Just wondered if it's normal.

Yes, totally normal.

Frostbite looks like black patches, usually on the comb points. You can coat combs, Wattles, and legs with Vaseline to protect them from frostbite if it's a problem.

Thanks for the info aurora! I'm starting to relax some about the cold. They did great through the last 3 days and nights of -14 to -18 wind chill. Supposed to be in the 40's this week and 20s at night so not as bad. Am going to get heater for watered though!! Tired of bundling up three times a day to go out and de ice the waterer!!

I went back out and caught the buff with the black spot and discovered it was some kind of oil so she must of been exploring under husbands trucks. So false alarm about frost bite but will keep what you said in mind for future below zero times. Thanks again.

And last thing I wanted to share a pic of our house sparrow. We found her as a fledgling this past summer and managed to raise her to adulthood. She is semi tame. Stays in a big bird cage at night but free roams in house during day. She loves to sit in our shoulders and buzz by the kids heads. She doesn't bite or act wild really. Just a sweet little bird! First wild bird I've managed to nurse back to health and keep alive. Usually they are too fragile when found as babies fallen from their nests. She is happy and healthy.
