A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Awesome information! I hadn't heard about the Rusty Slate variety before. Thank you very much!

Here's a shot of the other tom, with his sister behind him (the other one is a complete lap bird, silly thing)

You can see both girls in this one, but they tend to be more ornery than our Jakes regarding camera/shint phones getting close;
Looks like your hens are Narragansetts. The other tom is most likely a Bronze split to Narragansett which simply means he is carrying a recessive n (Narragansett) gene. The only difference in the color genes between a Bronze hen and a Narragansett hen is the single n gene that the Narragansett hen has and the Bronze hen does not have.

Peachicks need higher protein feed and I did the same for them - chick start mixed with game feed. I was brooding chicks at the same time and it was just easier like you said.

@duluthralphie , remind me again, where's Marties? I buy my game feed when I travel to Grand Rapids. The local L&M carries it, but nowhere around my parts has higher protein feed. It's also like $26 there. So expensive.

You have one in St Francis and another in Elk River. I use Elk River and Monticello, I think my 28% protein is 12-13 bucks for 50 pounds.

Good afternoon! Hope all is well with everyone. :)

Just wanted to pop in and show a pic and ask a possible breeding question! We finally figured out what our mysterious light colored Jake was, we *believe* he's a lilac?

Our question is;
We purchased all 4 of our Poults from the same farm. Our two girls are Narragansett x Bronze's (which he is supposed to be as well, I'm not sure how he really came about in their flock...), how likely would it be that they're related? And I've ran the porters calculator, and it appears the cross would end up with Red Slate poults, unless I ran the calculator wrong? I wanna make sure, just in case. :) I can post some pics of the hens if it helps clarify questions. :)

We're also trading our spare Narragansett x Bronze Jake for a Palm for him, we're kinda making him our "main man" this spring. :) We're really in love with the Turkeys here.

I try to never disagree with R2elk because I am normally prove wrong.

That said something does not look right for a rusty Slate. But something looks more wrong for a red slate.

So until I can figure out something different I will go with Rusty Slate. Is he a young bird? As I recall JJ changed appearances as he has gotten older.

These are the oldest pictures of JJ I could find, they are 3 years old. He appears redder than yours. I could not find an old Ethel one. Due to a computer crash and change. My pictures never are older than my Computor as I am real bad at backing them up.

He sure looked different than he does now.

got my new chickens home. no pics yet of them. just got them in and it's about dark. 4 new hampshire roos. 5 cream legbar hens and a cockerel.

while we were talking she said she had hatching eggs. I ended up with these. My incubating addiction took over.

400

6 and a half dozen legbar mainly and black copper maran. with a couple welsummer in there.

ralphie got a question for you. how fast do spurs grow on legbars. she showed me a roo that she said was 8 months old and his spurs were at least 1 and a half inches long. I have some 3 yo barred and wyandotte roos that are that big.

WOW.. Did they feed him steroids?

I will go look tomorrow, because to be honest I have never paid attention, BUT I think I would have noticed 1 1/2 inch spurs on a Cockerel.

Are you planning to hatch the eggs? Duh...

You have some nice blue ones and some not so nice green ones. Hatch them separately (just on hatching day) Mark the ones from the blue eggs only breed them next year. I am trying to cement the blue egg gene so I do that.

Are you NPIP? I love the welsummer egg colors, I am disappointed in my Cuckoo Maran eggs.

They were hatched the first week of October!

You owe me!!

I had to know so I went out in the cold with my hat/light on and checked my 22 month old rooster. He has spurs of around an inch and they are not impressive.

HOWEVER!! He did not like being disturbed on his roost and bit the hades out of my hand with one nasty fast peck.

I was going to tell you what nice calm birds they are, but you may not believe me while I am dripping blood.

Based on the information in this study, it is a myth that chicks require a lower percent protein than do poults. According to this study it takes 70% protein to cause kidney disease in chickens while it only takes 40% protein to cause kidney disease in turkeys.

When I brood chicks, keets and poults together, they all get a high quality 28% protein turkey/gamebird starter while they are in the brooder.

I have never seen any ill effects on any of the chicks from the higher protein feed.

One really bad habit that I often read about are the people who mix in a medicated chick starter with the non-medicated turkey/gamebird starter. This can end up causing problems because the ratio of medication in the chick starter is being decreased below the proper dosage and can lead to the targeted organisms developing immunity to the medication.

I did that mix with my Peachicks. I was told to go that route by many Pea-people (or whatever you want to call them LOL), so I did. I agree, seemed to take away from the protein content and the purpose of medicated chick starter. Oh and thanks for the link! A lot of great information.

I got robbed. They'd be about equal distance for me. How much do you get layer feed for?

Good luck with your hatch! I think the cream legbar roosters are beautiful! I have a few black copper marans myself. Next to a lap bird that I have no clue what breed it is, my marans are my favorite birds. Always underfoot and looking for attention.
