A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I have been feeding her, the lizards and the CX 2x a day.. it was 20 min worth and I cut it back to 10 min.. the BBB is getting about 1/2 cup of fermented feed... which = about 1/4 cup of dry feed 2x a day... trying to get her to look for food, however since the mating attempt she has sore and not as active.. but it is healing up nicely .. she used to follow me and now she is having trouble getting over the 2x4 threshold out the hoop coop... I help her over and then my back needs help
I hope she lasts long enough to get some poults before I have to send her to freezer camp
I change the frozen water 4x a day

thanks for advice :)

I am not a fan of FF feed, Just to put that up front.

However, if I understand one of the things that happens when Fermenting feed is carbohydrates are used up and changed to protein. In an animal where you are trying to limit the food value/protein intake, is fermenting the feed no contrary to the goal?

yeah I know you haven't tried FF ....

makes it closer to a COMPLETE protein... which is closer to animal protein... instead of getting some of the amino acids from grains..this is why vegetarians eat beans and rice together to make a complete protein (getting all the amino acids balanced)

sure helps with water consumption though ... and they get fuller faster so they don't know they are getting starved ..
lots of good probiotics and so forth. https://tikktok.wordpress.com/2014/04/13/fermented-feed-faq/

ok off my soapbox

Hey, welcome to the thread and to BYC ScottishKate! :D

Do you have plans to hatch Delilah's eggs?

Yes I would love to hatch her eggs but not sure about letting her do it herself as they run with my chooks and she just laid on floor of her shed. I do have a box in there big enough but nope the floor. Like I said still a novice and any tips welcome :)

It also will cause many crop issues over time. At a young age they might do fine but in the long run it's not good for the crop and once they have crop issues they don't last long. The feed keeps fermenting while in the crop which can causing sour crop. Not trying to turn you against it just saying that it's not all what it's cracked up to be. People only talk about the pros it seems ;)

I had heard of a person that said she talked to someone whose vet said the feed caused the sour crop. Didn't say the fermentation was the issue .. but might be what she meant.... do you know anyone who had sour crop from the ff? So far I can only find 3rd party accounts... I would like to get a first hand account.

I used to work at a college and I contacted the vet tech program there.. they hadn't heard of any issues feeding ff.. but that doesn't mean there isn't.. most people don't take chickens to the vet.. they felt since the food goes through the crop rather quickly, unless the crop already had an impaction or issue, the feed wouldn't have time to do additional fermenting... they also speculated that the ff might help loosen up a blockage by helping to breaking it down ... but they are retired vets that are teachers and not in the real world hands on any more.

I say raise them how you want. Like you said not many of us have chickens that actually ever see a vet. If not for the USDA Vet inspecting me, mine never would see one.

The FF feed is issue becomes so personal and finding any reliable information that is not antidotal is nearly impossible. It tears threads apart so I prefer we just talk about what keeps us together,,,Turkeys..
