A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I need to get to work, but I have been searching for a new chicken breed, I know this is a turkey thread, but as the OP I can talk about whatever I want!!!! (Stalin reincarnated).....

Anyone have a suggestion for a dark egg laying breed that does not have a single comb, and is APA recognized?

I have the cuckoo marans that are not APA and lay eggs once in a great while and have single combs...They are leaving me on Thursday, So I need other suggestions for next year. Also if you know a good breeder with good stock that is NPIP that would help too..

It would also get me out of the house and to work, which would make Judy very happy today..

Woo hoo! Sabrina has laid two eggs!

Something in my pen is laying SUPER DARK large eggs... At first I thought it was the Maran hybrid, but there are only a couple of them. After I started counting eggs and eyeballing possible suspects, I'm convinced its the barred rocks. They look like maran eggs. Now I'm wondering if the barred rocks are really barred rocks. They came from TSC. I've never had BR lay eggs this dark. I will get a pic. later.
On another note.
I decided to cull the incubator full of eggs that were heated to 120 degrees for who knows how long and confirmed by three thermometers two of which are high dollar mechanical units. While looking at turkey eggs I noticed a chicken egg PIP!!!! Some of the TURKEY EGGS ARE ALIVE AND MOVING ALSO!!!! I can't believe it!!

Ralph, anytime I want to research a new breed I go to "Feathersite". I find it easy to navigate & I like some of the personal experience comments. Also the links to breed clubs.

Cuckoo Marans can look similar to barred rocks. The difference is the shanks. English Cuckoo Marans have clean shanks, but the legs should be pink whereas barred rocks legs are yellow.

I would guess that you have cuckoo marans not barred rocks of type getting super dark eggs from them. And, that's WONDERFUL that some of your eggs are still fine! Can't wait to see pictures!
