Lots of posts in here today! I read through them all and now I forgot what I was going to say.

Oh, I know. Ralphie, you should try Langshans! Well, except their eggs are not real dark. Kind of dark, though. And they are just OK layers. Some every day, some every other. And of course, none when they go broody. And they also have a single comb, BUT- it's a medium to small size comb, and it handles winter pretty well. So it might not be so bad for you. At least it's a breed you can show! Anyway, I couldn't think of any breeds that fit your criteria, and I really like my Langshans, so I'm just putting a plug in for them.

I think I was gonna buy some Langshan eggs from a breeder. She has some of the best Langshans in the States I was told. And judging from pics I agree they are amazing!

Oh, they are watching me alright! Every time I wanted to check the progress of an egg hatching, the whole herd of them had to run over to my side of the incubator and block my view. That nosey turkey "supervisor" personality is wired into them from day one!

I'm pleased, because all 8 that made it to lockdown hatched! I only set 9. The one was an early quitter.

I set 10 chicken eggs for tutors, 5 of which were infertile. The other 5 all made it. So that is like almost 100% hatch rate! I did have to assist 1 of the chickens, and 2 that I should not have assisted that were stragglers that I should have left alone. Thankfully I didn't kill them. The one would not have made it without me- it was quite glued in. It's already had one bath and is so gluey, that it is going to need a better bath before it is cleared to leave the incubator.

So, I went to the feed store today...they have Golden Comets, Barred Rocks, and RIRs...
If they had some buff brahmas or maybe standard cochin I woulda got some. Nobody wants those breeds though...they want production chicks so that's all they have...
