A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

We're back in action!

Yay!

I just posted about my new turkey on the byh thread, but I will copy and paste it here, since I doubt that thread will continue now. Here's what I wrote:

Awesome poults and broody hen, Holm!

I just got back from my 3 1/2 hour road trip to buy my new tom. I don't know, I think I must be the most naive trusting individual that ever walked the earth. I wouldn't lie to a buyer, and when I think someone seems like a nice person, I believe that they're not lying to me either. Plus, I'm sure that I see what I want to see, and gloss over anything that detracts from it.

So I saw a kind of rough looking turkey, with a few bugs near his vent, but since I'd already convinced myself I wanted him, I didn't turn around and walk away. No, I brought him home with me. I asked the man how old he was and he said about two years. I now believe that to be a lie. He kept explaining that he looks a little beat up because it's mating season and he's been fighting with the other toms. Which I bought, because they would fight, right? When there's three toms and not many hens that I saw.

And the guy had him caught up in a cage, but now i think that was so I couldn't get a very good look at him. Cuz now that I have him home, I can see that he must be quite old. His beak looks brittle and worn down. His face looks, I don't know, old? And his legs look scaly. I dosed him up good with ivermectin, and I'm hoping that if he just has scaly leg mites, then maybe getting that cured will make him look a lot better. But if it's old age, well, there's only one cure for that!

So I did put him in quasi-quarantine after all. He'll spend at least a week, maybe two letting the ivermectin kill off his mites, and then I'll see if he's fit to meet my other birds. Of course, they will still meet through the wire, but at least there will be no body contact yet.

I wasn't too worried about the few bugs I saw near his vent. That's something I treat my own birds for occasionally anyway. I'm pretty sure the ivermectin will take care of those.

But he doesn't look nearly as nice as he did in the pictures that the man supposedly took on "Friday". That bird had beautiful feathers, and this guy is in serious need of a moult! So just another sign that the guy was being dishonest on purpose. Unless maybe since he had him shut in a dog crate overnight, that might have torn up all his feathers. Hard to believe one night would shred them that bad though.

So, I will take some photos of him after I go detox my car. :p

Congrats. On the new tom.

What type?

Best Indicator for age of a tom is the length of his spurs if they haven't been trimmed most generally grow at roughly a given length per year.

Well since we've been away.

My broody turkeys I gave chicken eggs to hatched 1 chick. I got them out of the box and instead of having more chicken eggs under them. All the chicken eggs were gone but 1 and they were on 7 turkey eggs. Those are now in the incubator and chick in the brooder.

1 of my broody palms died for some reason. Now down to 2 hens. Both are now locked onto a nest where the other one passed.

I have hatched about 40 poults in the last week. Finally got about 6 pure palms. 24 narris. Rest are bourbons.

Went to move some from cabinet to hatcher. Was thinking about it anyway and I had heard peeping but had some hatching anyway. So didn't think about it. The turner cycled and I heard thump thump. Opened up the cabinet and there were 11 poults looking at me. But the downside I didn't have anything for traction on the floor and it resulted in several messed up legs. Got all but 1 or 2 straightened out.

There is a local auction coming up from a man that raised gamebird 50,000 a year. They are gonna sell all his equipment.

16 cabinet incubators. A 5 ft x 5ft hatcher, feather pluckers and processing equipment. :drool

Other than that not much else. Except I'm gonna sell off most of my chickens. Cutting back to a dozen hens. Decided to raise white leghorn.

Just mainly gonna concentrate on quail, pheasant, and turkeys. To hatch and raise

He does have longer spurs than my old toms did. What is the length per year supposed to be?

I believe he is a Phoenix of some sort. When he bought him, all he was told was "Phoenix", not red or golden Phoenix. I looked Phoenix up on Porter's site, and for red it should be b1b1 Ccg Rr, and for golden, all that plus Narragansett. He definitely has the b1s. His wings are all black with no barring. He appears to have a red gene. Whether he is split to grey remains to be seen.

I'll get better pics after he's allowed to leave jail. For now, the color will be off because of the blue tarp over the hoops.
And there must be a trick to inserting the photos where you want them. They went to the top,and I'm just leaving them there.

Good looking tom.

The way I figure spurs is.
1 year old 1/4 inch or less
2 years old 1/2 to 3/4 inch
3/4 year old 1 inch to 1.25 inch
4/5 year old 1.25 to 1.5 inch.

Never see many with spurs that are longer than 1.5 inches.
