A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Congrats. On the new tom.

What type?

Best Indicator for age of a tom is the length of his spurs if they haven't been trimmed most generally grow at roughly a given length per year.

Finnie, no 2 year old has a beard that long.. I am so glad you decided to have a mini-quarantine.

Got a video of broody Ethel Jr... She is dangerous lol! Also have pics of Mr. T poults

You are so lucky you did not lose any important pieces. Give her 2 more weeks and you would have...I suggest you not try that when the eggs hatch either. She hit me really hard for just taking a peek last year..

Well since we've been away.

There is a local auction coming up from a man that raised gamebird 50,000 a year. They are gonna sell all his equipment.

16 cabinet incubators. A 5 ft x 5ft hatcher, feather pluckers and processing equipment. :drool

Post the auction bill, some of us might make the trip for that kind of stuff..

Finnie it looks like he has been in a lot of snood pulling contests... Sure is pretty... I would put money on him being 4 years old...

Ralphie I believe you. She was a little more feisty today. Not bad yet but a little more nippy

I wish there would be an auction like that here! Although I spend more money at auctions than I should... Once I start bidding I don't stop...

Yay! Things are back up and running :). I didn't realize how much I would miss my daily reading about birds lol. Enjoying watching everyone's pictures. No babies here this year - just trying to hold my population level, so I have to check out everyone else's new bird pictures.

Good looking tom.

The way I figure spurs is.
1 year old 1/4 inch or less
2 years old 1/2 to 3/4 inch
3/4 year old 1 inch to 1.25 inch
4/5 year old 1.25 to 1.5 inch.

Never see many with spurs that are longer than 1.5 inches.
I will take a look later and see if I can get an accurate idea. I'm sure they are at least 1.25".

I thought you would approve. Although I don't have any way to keep the others 15' away.

Thanks Holm. The man did say he was getting rid of him due to all the fighting. I wonder if he will fight with my poults when they grow up.

Ethel Jr. is very pretty!

Does anybody know if four year old toms are still fertile?

Come on down, pick up Vicki and the three of us can make a trip of it...:wee:woot:highfive::thumbsup

Just remember the difference between one price and apiece...:lau

When your poults grow up, the tom will be viewed as the dominant male until the male poults become brave enough to take him on. At that time there will be some fighting. As long as he is clearly the dominant male, the fighting should not be long.

It is an individual thing but most 4 year old toms are fertile.

Of course once the toms reach a certain age, things like beard length and spur length are meaningless in determining age other than to say they are at least 4 years or older.

15 feet was just a number 1 foot is better than zero. Direct contact is what you want to limit.

I agree with Holm he appears swollen from a Snood pulling contest...One has to wonder why God put a snood on top their heads that serves no purpose other than to be pulled by others.....

The beards get ripped off and eaten so much, I do not use it to indicate age, other than when I see one as long as that one is, I know he is over 2 by a bit. My 2 year olds have short 2-3 inch beards....But that could be because my hens love nibbling on a beard...
