A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

@Hillaire I just realized my answer was a bit simple and short. To be clear, Turkeys for the first 8 weeks of life live for only one thing... That is to find a more innovative way to commit suicide. To that end when mine go to pasture, they go in a 3' tall 8'X8' shelter with metal covering the back half, save a vent in the back. The rest is chicken wire and there are three hot wires covering the bottom foot of the shelter. They'll spend 5-6 weeks in there moving to fresh grass regularly. After 8 weeks they're pretty indestructible.

lol thank you for that. Yes, they certainly like to kill themselves quickly... started with 10 down to 7 as they kept flipping on their backs... I have them in a 6 foot long 5 foot wide 4 foot tall brooder so it should last them a bit... we've been getting lots of rain and cold days here in ny the last week or so so I have been keeping them in that brooder the white broad breasted is going to be a giant... the bourbon reds are same age almost half the size lol

Do you have a chick...The real chicken type... in with your poults? I find a chick or two can act as a tutor and spiritual advisor for young turkeys and give them the brains and will to live.

I've found that putting a few chickens a week older than them in the brooder with them will lower the mortality rate. Last batch of 25, got 5 chickens and zero fatalities.
