A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

A Black turkey is Black based and has brown eyes but a Black (BB) based White turkey is also recessive white (cc) and has blue eyes. I do not know whether they found this out through trial breeding or through DNA testing but this has been established for a long time. If you want an in depth explanation of how it works, you should contact Kevin Porter since the information comes from his website.
According to Porter's site and the conservancy, the APA did not include blue eyes in the SOP. No one really knows why... Hmmm its a puzzle...:caf

To be honest while interesting, I really was just wondering why blue would not be allowed in the SOP then, more than the why it happened.

LOL Should have read this first.

I can almost bet someone had some brown eyed blacks that sat on the SOP committee and did not want to chance losing out to a blue eyed one...

That kind of politics happens in the bird world.

Just think about what is going on in the proposed Cream Legbar SOP and there should no longer be any wondering about what ends up in SOPs. Too often the people involved in creating SOPs are not that aware of everything that needs to be considered and only care about the features they want included.

When the Toad Owners of America Club writes the SOPs for toads....You can bet mine will be winners!

If the SOP peeps raise such a kerfuffle about self blue vs lav, I doubt they'll approve of a name like 'Toads'... Just sayin, eh :p
What SOP? The APA only recognizes 8 varieties of turkeys and Self Blue (aka Lavender) is not listed. I suspect that they would allow this variety to pass because the listing is for Slate not Blue Slate and the SOP allows the black dotting of the Blue Slate but does not require it.

I'm talking about the controversy surrounding Ameraucana chickens. Not turkeys. Sorry, I forgot which thread I was on.
