Predator question: I lost a chick last night--but its weird. It looks like what ever the culprit was grabbed the bird through the chicken wire and somehow managed to pull it out. All that was left inside the wire was the gizzard. Blood on the bottom rail, and a trail containing a small bone, a partial wing and a foot. No tracks to speak of. The wire at the corner was bent out, but no holes or loose spots. Any idea what I'm dealing with?

coon or skunk is my guess

I lost 14 birds last night...A Neighbor will be losing a dog soon.

Well, I just finished putting 2' of 1/2" welded wire around the bottom of the shelter and added 4 hot wires six inches from the shelter, all down low. We'll see what tomorrow brings. If its a skunk, we'll know cause the birds will likely get sprayed. ARG!

I had a skunk snitching turkey eggs from under ladybird. It didn't hurt the bird. I am sure, however, that had there been no eggs, the turkey would be dead. Skunks love eggs more than meat it seems.

Thanks for the ferret info. I know there are probably pockets of black footed ferrets near my parents place, but dad said he wouldn't guarantee their safety, only because of fear of the endangered species act. We've lost land to the government before due to wildlife...

I have a question. Should I let my turkeys roost in the tree or should I make sure they are securely penned up each night? These guys are only 2.5 months old and I don't know if they are 1) mature enough 2) smart enough to get away from predators 3) or if the risk is minimal. They ARE in the pen tonight cause I need to get some sleep! And I wouldn't be getting much if I have to worry that someone is getting an early turkey dinner.

I agree....your birds need to be in their pens at night for their own protection. Coons, owls, you name it...lots of nighttime predators. They are young, start training them to go into their pen now.
