Hi everyone with turkeys, I have some 4 months old now, I'm trying to learn to speak turkey! Up til now, they mostly just kind of chirped, whistled, and peeped, but now they are making different sounds, some sharp "chup-chup" noises, and seem to be getting more aggressive with each other. Still friendly to me though. No gobbling sounds yet. They are supposed to be bronze turkeys, but must be mixed breed, as some are mottled with white, and most have white on the wings, unlike a standard bronze. They might have some bourbon red in there, or maybe a white turkey. I am wondering what the "chup" sound might mean? Appreciate the help
 
Well, I hate days where I have to spend most of my time on the phone. Very irritated that my new spotlight did not come with either a battery pack or a charger. Ended up calling the manufacturer, who told me what I needed. By the time I am done, I will have a VERY expensive spotlight! (grrrrrr)

When I could finally take a break and a deep breath, I went out to play with the turkeys. First I hand fed them and then they ate some grain out of their favorite blue Maxwell house container. They apparently love blue - but not so keen on the red containers.

Then they took off flat out racing across the back yard and I took off to catch up (neighbor had his huge dog loose). When I caught up, the daggone turkeys raced back to the back porch. So, I caught up again when they suddenly took off to the opposite corner of the yard where there is a smattering of trees, brush, and some berry bushes - and lots of bugs.

I finally got smart (and tired) and took the riding mower. The two hens and the little tom (going to call him Ironsides - one day to be "Ole Ironsides") went bug and berry picking, but the big tom came up and put his foot on the footboards and acted as though he was going to step on up. I think he might like to go riding one day! :lau

I spent the better part of the next hour chasing them across the yard, turning around and they would chase me back to the pen. Gosh, they ARE fast!

Need to come up with names, but have a block wall going on. :he

I am open to any suggestions. lol

I surely do not want to call the big tom "Toffee" as my daughter started him out as.

Edited to add: I'm pretty sure the pastor of the little white church across the road is positive I have lost my last marble.....

You will get to understand some of the sounds, others they seem to use for more than one thing.

You can tell sometimes with the way they stand and look also.
 
I grafted a poult to a broody hen tonight, let's hope she takes it, although I don't see a problem. I slipped 6 poults under ladybird but only two were left, and her face was all messed up. I think they got out of their maternity ward and got killed by chickens somewhere, the turds.
