For those of you saying your turkeys are not stupid, I would like to suggest you get some of my lines....

I was coming to the house from the barn, and I saw a young turkey take off running with something in it's mouth. It was large and looked like an old cigar.

Having no smokers here I wonder where it got that. The Race was on and on and on....

On about lap 19 they got close to me, and I saw the object of everyone's desire....It was a piece of dried dog turd......

Tell me again how smart your turkeys are so I can belittle mine some....

She was out of the pasture doing her morning routine and got attacked by something. She survived the attack but didn't make it through the day.

Seriously! Using the keyword turkey makes Mr. Google pretty unhelpful!

Since I am in Western Maryland, we "usually" have pretty intense winter weather.

Still laughing over Ralphie's post! When I first read this sentence, I was expecting the word "mild", not "intense"!

First bit of advice is to breath... You have options with your new poult... You can take it with you and setup a temp pen at your camp site. Or you can get a baby sitter. @memphis can tell you about that. You've done heroic thing. Just be sure it has water, shelter and food. and the rest will come naturally. First time it sits in your lap and coos, you'll melt like ice. I know you were not ready for the adventure to start yet--but you've graciously allowed it to start early. Relax and enjoy your new big feathered dog.

Or you can put her on Craigslist.


(But then you would miss out on all the fun.)
By the way, when you get around to making a permanent home for her, use hardware cloth. Raccoons can rip through chicken wire, so she won't be safe inside that.

So far I'm not satisfied with what they've come up with lol. I KNOW the two aren't red bronze like someone suggested.

I don't believe that I have seen this question previously. If for some unknown reason I felt the need to measure a turkey, I would measure its height from the ground to the top of its back right behind the neck. I would also measure its width at the front part of the wings while the wings are in the closed position.

R2elk, thank you for the response. I will try and do that tomorrow and compare that to measurements on the other tom.

As I have said previously, these poults came here on the same day and at the same size. The one in my avatar appears to be several inches taller and wider than the other guy. Hence, my questioning if he could be a half-breed out of a broad-breasted bird. His legs are really thick and makes the other tom's legs look like the hens legs. There is NOT much difference between Iron's legs and the girls and he's only slightly taller/larger.

I do know both of them are male cause I have now seen both strut and gobble in front of me. In fact, I was sitting with them earlier today and played a youtube video of a turkey gobble.

Ahem....might not do that again as both toms got all rednecked (literally) and had an.....ahhhh.... minor confrontation.

I know that many enjoy getting their toms to gobble and it is really easy to do. Usually any loud sound will set the toms off. However when you have multiple toms in the same area it can start immediate fights and really cause the toms to get wound up.

It is not unusual for some toms to develop at different rates especially if they are different varieties.

@duluthralphie I am still waiting on your genetics question. What did your turkeys produce that you don't think should be possible?

Thanks for reminding me, I took it's picture and promptly forgot to post it.. Old age is setting in more and more..

Its the lighter colored one, I can try to crop and pull it in if needed. It looks almost mottled. It does not look like any other bronze I have.
