I have a question. My turkeys free range most of the day. Plus they get their feed. If I need to go away a couple of days, can I substitute something like hanging squash or melons since they will have to stay penned?

Add a head of iceberg lettuce and cabbage to your list and they will have a field day. I would use an eye bolt and chain to suspend it above my poults and they'd peck at it all day. I quit using the chain when they tried to eat the eye bolt. Now I just drop it in and let them play soccer.

Add a head of iceberg lettuce and cabbage to your list and they will have a field day. I would use an eye bolt and chain to suspend it above my poults and they'd peck at it all day. I quit using the chain when they tried to eat the eye bolt. Now I just drop it in and let them play soccer.

Lol! I already give them cabbage from time to time because my bro in law planted a big garden, then became ill and couldn't take care of it. So they had a lot of really really buggy cabbages.

What I did with those was to poke the handle end of a old fishing rod through it and left just the bottom eye. Then tied the entire thing to the top of the original coop they were in with a piece of rope.

I expect to get a bumper crop of squash and other gourd veggies (zuchinni and pumpkins), along with a lot of overripe tomatoes and green peppers from him.

How about apples? My 30 year old apple tree has a bunch of what I call "deer apples" on it as they are mostly blemished and have bugs. I could make a "tray" for some of this.

I haven't tried lettuce since I seldom buy and did not grow any. What garden I have has been so soggy, I don't expect to get much but some summer squash and maybe a few cabbages. I already ate the tomatoes and don't plan to share the few I have left.

You might want to core the apples, seeds are bad for birds. Although, I've given them the occasional apple without incident.

I tried bumblefoot surgery on my one hen a couple of times, before I had any success. The last time, I waited until her foot was more swollen and I could see the kernel through the skin. That may sound cruel, but when I had tried before, I could not find a core and she was not having difficulty walking. I did post pics in the pa thread, but I can put them here too, if you like.

My chickens and turkeys love apples. Just cut it in half and let them peck away! They also love berries and tomatoes. I give then whatever looks like is going to turn.

My birds are kind of pushy they don't wait for me to bring them the apples, they just go to the apples and help themselves.

I think that's my problem with the bumble foot on the others. I think I should have waited till it got worse. They weren't even limping yet. This girl is something else though.
