A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Should my turkeys have some sort of fear of dogs? My one dog (recovering from surgery himself, hence the donut e-collar) has an insane prey drive and wants to murder them all... they come up and pip at him and peck his nose. It drives him crazy and he forgets to breathe and trembles all over.

Not if they've never learned to fear them. If they've seen your dog from day one, they probably think he's as safe as you are. Watch your dog carefully. I had a Siberian Husky that had a very high prey drive. One day, I walked outside for 5 minutes, thinking my brooder was secure, and she managed to rip it open and kill every one of my chicks. They were or very first ones and we were all very bonded to them. It was a hard lesson to learn. We had to watch her close every time we took her out to potty or had babies in the house, right up until the day she passed away at 12 1/2 years old.

My Daisy does not like or trust dogs. Annie, given the chance, would be dog aggressive. It all hinges on their personal dog experiences.

Kathy, what up with the tom and the babies? Too sweet!

R2elk, I remember you posting a pic of that wild hen in the snow. And the story of her returning every year. Kind of sad that she's gone.....

Thanks everybody for the help. I have another picture of my favorite, I will post tomorrow. I am hoping that one is a she, but today I noticed the Mohawk is disappearing from the top if it's head.
I have a couple poults that I'm really hoping are girls. Some days their Mohawks look like they are disappearing, and I get worried. But so far they are smaller than their brother and look nothing like males, so I still have hope. I should post pics.

I think that at the size they have reached, if they were boys, it would be very obvious by now. So I say girls, like everyone else. :)

Here are some pics of my youngest poults. There are three poults. Two have the blue gene, and those are the ones I'm hoping will be girls. The one that has black markings is a boy,no doubt about him.

These are from Elderberry, who I suspect could be a semi-pencilled Sweetgrass, and Swan, a blue Palm. I also believe Elderberry is split to narri, because half of the poults hatched out looking like royal palms. (I sold those.)

Of the ones I kept, two had Sweetgrass markings (yellow with a black or grey stripe down the back) and one was mostly yellow, but it had a lot more grey markings than just a stripe. So I kept that one to see what it would turn out like. I am really loving it! So I really need it to be female, or else I will have a really hard time deciding which toms have to go.

This is that one. It seems to have a red gene, too, which would have had to come from Elderberry:

Here is the boy, who should be a Sweetgrass (I hope):

Please don't be boys. Please don't be boys...

They are only 10 weeks old, so more time is needed to know for sure.
