A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

I have read soybean should be cooked before feeding them...Why,,I have no idea.

I think I feed too high a level of protein I get an angel wing now and then...I might cut down on it sooner.
There is a blurb in one of my vet books that's says angel wing might be from something else. I will try to find that blurb for you.

All my birds free range and usually all day. That said, if I have to go somewhere, the turkeys get put away. One, to make sure they stay home. Two, to make sure someone else doesn't try to give them another home (or oven space). Therefore, their range time can last from 2 hours to 10 or more.

Again, free range and turkeys is kinda of an odd combination. After watching them for hours, I am convinced they eat for an hour or so - and then go bug everyone else. Then beg for food out of a container, then go range some more. But none of them free range to eat constantly nor consistently.
:lau

That's so true. They definitely do free range differently! My favorite, is in the afternoon, when they all take a little preen and nap under the trees. Only my spoiled hand raised turkeys try to eat from a container, but they are pigs when they do.

I'm trying this multi-quote thing again...

Most people like us, have a problem with solvent based methods for extracting soy oil and making soy meal... Don't want the solvent in the feed, also don't want round-up or other stuff in there.

Roasting removes the "bad" stuff and develops the omega 3s in the oil. I use whole roasted soy, or expeller pressed roasted full fat meal. I prefer whole and then cracked into the feed.

Good find. R2, looks like you and I use very similar methods. 28% first 3 weeks, 24% next 4, 18 for the next 4, then 16 for duration. Once I get all the "stuff" I need I'm going to try the SPN guidelines and see how close I can get. They use 7 different mixes (actually 8) for different stages of growth, which also requires fairly early identification of sex and decision of who is for meat and breeding. Young Toms who are going to be breeders get one ration, while hens who will be breeders get another and of course those going to the freezer, yet another. If my math is right these three start at 20 weeks.

You don't want a little Haxane with your soybean oil? Haha. It is scary what has to be done to that stuff to make it shelf stable. If you guys want learn more about the history of cooking oils, I highly recommend Nina Teicholz book "The Big Fat Surprise."

So I'm pretty sure this little royal palm is a Jake. This picture is from about a month ago. Yesterday, a neighbor came by and this little guy and my Tom were strutting the whole time. Then, my neighbor pointed out that the little guy was "puffing", just like the Tom. Although his puff sounded more like a sneeze, haha!

I will have to post a newer picture of my Tom, he looks so much better now that his feathers have grown in more.

Soooooo cute:love

I let everyone out this morning early when it was still dark. Which I have never done before. I was up working all night. No surprise. I decided to take a quick duck and turkey break and go outside to check on everyone. I was horrified because I couldn't find Yumyum anywhere. I'm outside trying not to scream for her. I didn't want to wake the neighbor. I sat down in the driveway and started to cry thinking the worst. I noticed the ducks walking around the house in a circle looking up and talking. I got up and the pastor from next door came over with coffee I asked him to help me find her and he pointed up. She was on the roof.

Lol! When I used to let mine free range, we would be sitting in the house and hear this wierd noise. It would be the hens running across the roof lol. We had to stop letting them run lose though since they loved to wander pretty far. The hunting cabin next door was no big deal since they're only there sometimes and enjoyed seeing them but our other neighbor didn't appreciate them going in to his yard :/ I miss seeing them playing outside.

I recognize that look: "hey mom, how do I get down?"

I was giving them feed in the morning out of a container just to have them come to me and know I was a "friendly". Now, it's in case I want to check something, so they might get a bite or two. I no longer feed them in the morning, and have changed it to the evening right before I want to get them in the pen. Makes it easier when they come running! :)

You are right though - when eating out of a container, they are pigs indeed! I have started to wet it down a bit because it does have powdered grain - and that makes it clump together more and they lose less.

Mine also will go sit in the tree right behind the shed or on the roof of the house. I'm sure they provide "second looks" whenever someone drives by. lol

The couple of times mine have jumped the fence into the neighbor's yard or into the woods. It amazes me how they can go over - yet have NO idea how to get back.

It's a good thing the girl next door is a vet tech, has pygmy goats, a couple old cats she rescued, and a couple of dogs. Last year, she did have chickens and a couple of steers, but I think they were food. She has no problem walking up to the turkeys and picking them up to place them back over the fence. :D
