A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Sorry, no advice on the thorn in the foot other than to keep it clean and dry...

Question: is it ok to leave my turkey poults panting? Like the dumb-dumbs are sitting in the highest roost in the sun and panting with wings out on an 86* day but the shade/ground level is much cooler. Made sure they had plenty of water but I can't help the weather going from 60's to 86 in 2 days...

They are spur bumps, totally normal :)

Normal?? They just kinda come out of nowhere? Overnight. Ok I need to sleep. I thought it was something I did when I stepped on his foot. WOW!!! REALLY GOING TO HAVE TO GET HIM TO NOT CLIMB AND PERCH ON MY SHOULDER.

That's a huge shoulder bird! I would train him to learn to love hugs instead lol

Ok, so now I know why he is limping. It is too dark to take a picture. His left foot had a bad thorn in it. I just cut my hay field and I'm sure that is where it came from, because I had one come through my flip flop yesterday and he was out there with me.

He on the other foot has a bad case of bumblefoot . I understand how to do the surgery, unfortunately I have had to do it to several of the rescue ducks.

My question is how do you do it to a 40lb Tom Turkey who has taken on Hawks and well needless to say we have a hawk free zone.
I have read just about everything I can find on bumblefoot.
I have a ton of penicillin g, some of the Ducks are on it. Can I just give him shots? Do I need to open it up? How do I hold him if I should open it up? He is a lap turkey, unless your doing something he doesn't like or he doesn't want to be held. Then he might as well be a grizzly bear.
Any advice? I will tell you he didn't like the fact I pulled the thorn out. I did that but straddling him and lifting up on his leg gently.

Ok, for the thorn, just removing it and keeping the wound clean is all you can realy do. You can use neosporin without pain relief on it and off you feel it necessary, use gauze and medical tape to bandage it up.

As for the bumble foot, I've done many bumblefoot surgeries, usualy on chickens. I never use any antibiotics. My method for treating it involves tightly wrapping the bird in a towel (though you may need a blanket for your boy) and using an exacto knife to cut either around the infection or a straight line through, depending on how it looks. I then squeeze out as much of the plug/infection as possible. Whatever I can't squeeze out, I use tweezers to pull out. I usualy take little breaks to soak the foot in warm water with either alcohol or Epsom salt to clean it out and see better. Once it's all cleaned out, I pack it with neosporin, cover it with gauze, and wrap with medical tape. I then check it, clean it, and change the bandage. It's amazing how quickly it tends to heal up. Your guy is a BIG boy. Not having his feet under him for a week or so could be very hard. Keeping him contained in a smaller area to heal where he won't be tempted to try to walk around might be the best option.

Turkeys are definitely not the smartest of birds lol. Hopefully they will learn but you could always mist them with the hose.

We had do cletis recently. We did it at bedtime when he was a sleepy boy. He isnt a lappy at ALL and he was really very good. And we changed his bandage every other night. Kept neo on it and padded it with extra gauze. His was healed in a lil over a week. The night we did the surgery part we wrapped him in a towel but the other nights he was pretty content with just holdin. And by the time we were done he was actually kinda enjoyin the scatchin and lovin... we think... cause he would stand there not in hubbys arms for a few minutes and let us touch and pet him. :))

Ok, surgery on both feet done. I wish my human patients were so easy. I crated him inside and am giving him a few days off his feet. I gave him .05 cc of penicillin g in the thigh, just because I never do a Surgery without a little bit of antibiotics. I'm going to let Yumyum in for a visit in about an hour. He is eating and drinking. I hope I got it all!

Good job Mama Runner! Eating & drinking is a good sign.

Got home from business trip last night. Poor Daisy now down to one tail feather. Let little chicks out to run around this morning. All chicken hens fled in disgust. Guess they will have turkey moms. Both girls are good with them.
Ladybird ( burbon red)ended up raising four chicks for me this year.

i was going to say soak in epsom salts to loosen it up then pull as much as possible then coat with clear iodine
but looks like you already did it! Good Job!

super cute!!

Ok, little bit stressful day. I did dinner and one duck "Miss Daisy" I caught and looked at everyone else's feet, flippers, paws and human feet.

Everyone looks good except for those two. I am new to this bumblefoot .

Do I need to take any steps with the others? Do I need to post this in Duck forum?
