A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Poor Big Bird is having a rough molt this year - she is a strictly hands-off bird right now. Hard to believe that a few weeks ago she was sitting next to me begging for chin scratches. It was weird, she blew half her feathers two days after her last egg.

Looking a little bit ragged...

Pretty sure she is part porcupine right now

I think this one was "get away from me with that camera - can't you see that I'm half-nekkid here"

I got almost 5" of heavy white stuff starting yesterday afternoon and finishing up sometime during the night. It got down to 27°F. There are broken branches all over the place. The netting over the main part of the run which is normally 7' off the ground at the low point was down to 3' off the ground. Young trees laying down flat on the ground. There were just too many leaves left on the trees for a heavy wet snow like this. My brush pile is going to more than double in size.

The young turkeys are running around hollering, looking for something familiar.
thats crazy! i assume it is too early for it to stick?

The snow brought the Russian Olives down to where they were convenient for the turkeys.

pretty pictures, though i dont mind waiting for the snow :hugs you can keep it

Stupid Turkeys need a calendar this year... I made oven fried pork chops in a corn meal, cajun, turkey egg breading last night...... Turkey eggs and mid October do not belong in the same sentence in Minnesota.
i wouldnt mind my turkey laying right now, it would give me something useful for my incubator

Beautiful birds Rayon!
Started raining, went out to put the baby Speckled Sussex up and found them huddled under Annie's tail. Which she kindly spread open to help keep them dry. So wish I had my phone. It was cute.
awwwww

Thanks, memphis! My other half thought the toms tail feathers looked ragged so he decided to give him a feather trim...

Pic of Annie sheltering the chicks would have been awesome!! Great bird you have there...
LOL, poor guy!

X2! Except it was like 75° here but still! We're far from ready for snow!

On the egg front, the chickens haven't been giving me much of anything but I did get 1 turkey egg today!

I need to take some pictures of Princess tomorrow. That girl is NOTHING but pins all over! Poor girl!
yes pictures!!!

So today. The menz. Makin mad scientist “improvements” to the failure spring chicken plucker.... looks like i am a gonna be pluckin thirty five chickens and three turkeys.... all by hand. The end. :he:confused::sick Spring was only twenty two chickens.

See. They came in first for my thermometer. So i knew they was close. But i couldnt go watch the shennanigans cause mama had hand surgery yesterday and i been runnin from one house to the other doin all the things that needed doin. Then. They came in. Son the young first all smiley and grinnin like the cheshire cat. I thought halleluah no pluckin birds. Then he opened his mouth. And my dreams and hopes were shattered. Laughin like a nut back inside he goes out i go... then. Maman dad needs you. Why? Cause remember last time he was banned from anythin other than off with their heads? Yes son. So summoned i was to show this man who is holdin up this bird lookin frightened by its mere presence....how to.... get ready for it.... deep breath.... cut the ass out the chicken. :barnie. Now we have one completely cleaned bird soakin in salt water for dinner in a few nights. Yay fresh chicken! And my beautiful husbeastie still is not allowed to do anything more than off with their heads then cut them up. :lau. He is good with the butcherin but not so much the middle parts. I think he is jus tryin get out of the dirty job cause he did jus fine with his buns last week....

I do love all the fat i saw on this bird. :). The last we did were cx and they barely had any. These are rainbow rangers and mmmmmmmm i can taste the flavor already!

Breeding more muscle and less fat seems to be the trend these days. I'm all about that golden layer ( of fat).
