A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

If not for the holidays and things being tight right now I would order more of his experimentals. Since not breeding to a standard I like the idea of having unkown split genes and the surprise I may get breeding them.
I will just wait and hope he does the same as last year at end of season with cheaper prices and free shipping.

yes last year I had full coops mainly chickens..and still do except for the new coop... have to see if the local guy with white Cornish comes through before I order any turkeys I guess.. Have to see what my lone turkey hen produces :hmm

You know I'm past years he has displayed 24/7/365 and lately he hasn't been strutting much and is sleeping in a different spot now... Maybe he is just changing his ways some?

Ethel Jr has told him to knock it off!

Ok, You've got my curiosity up... My mature Toms don't seem particularly interested in displaying for us anymore (they'll actually walk up and eat out of my hand). When an outsider approaches the pasture they're in full display. My Teens were displaying for us for a bit, but seem to have followed the adults' lead. Let a hawk fly overhead and the adult toms go into full display while the teens fly after it.

Last few days, I've been having issues with the wild Toms. They run right through the fence, knocking it down, but flee when met by my toms. Ok, they can't fly so good, but are twice the size of the wilds... So what's going on here. This is new behavior.... :idunno

Seriously, only one of mine is on constant display-- the one headed towards becoming sandwich meat.....the others are hit and miss.....but I know in a months they will all be at it...

I am not sure how many will see spring..I am too busy to put up with PITA toms.

What is the trimming about? Do they like the taste of the beard? Or is it a mating thing? I have never understood it.

It is always the hens, I never see a Tom trim another Tom..
I don't know why but they certainly act like they are grooming the tom. I have had multiple hens work on the same tom at the same time. His beard had gotten out to about 4" when they started on him and it never got past 1 1/2" after that

Mabel trims Mr. Ts beard. But Ethel Jr doesn't.... I find the Guineas can be beard trimmers too? Mr. Ts beard is now growing and not being trimmed anymore... And you rarely see trimmed beards on wild turkeys?
