A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

My turkeys have yet to lay since they don't have official quarters and no supplemental lighting. They have taken to roosting in the rafters in the hay barn above the hay... Worse than pigeons. At least the horses don't care about the extra urea on the hay.
And I've hatched about 150 chicks so far with nary a call about purchasing, which I attribute to cold as well. No one wants babies when it's below zero out there. Ralphie, I discovered recessive white in my Marans flock, so far 6 out of about 130 chicks have come out white from my blue and black silver Marans.

It is most likely one of the various Rusty Blacks. Rusty Blacks can even have a Narragansett gene and still be a Rusty Black.

Aren't most of these names just marketing names Porter's came up with? As we have said before they are all mutts and Kevin has come up with a fantastic way to market them while experimenting with the genome.

There are just the 4-5 APA accepted varieties. If I was to look at my chicken mutts and give them names it would be the same thing, If I was a tenth of the marketing genius as Porter's is.

Maybe I should sell "specialty" chicks..When they are full grown send me a photo and I will tell you what you have.. I am thinking, Foghorn, FallBrush, Autumn, MoonShine, and so forth...

Nope. Many of these were named by other people. Porter originally named the Red Bronze an Auburn but someone else claimed that name for a different variety so Porter did name them Red Bronze. The Turkey Color Calculator returns the given name (if known) or in the case where the variety has not been named, it returns a descriptive name. Rusty Black will not breed true because of its heterozygous color genes but then Slates (an APA recognized variety) will not breed true either because of its heterozygous color gene (Dd).

The APA currently recognizes 8 varieties of turkeys (Standard Bronze, Beltsville Small White, White Holland, Bourbon Red, Narragansett, Slate, Black, and Royal Palm).

There are others that are worthy of recognition but I seriously doubt that any more will be added since I don't see any people working to get additional varieties recognized.

I knew I should have actually grabbed the SOP instead of guess at the number...

I have 5 babies this morning. I think that is all of them...

The one is a cute little bronzish polka dot.... BTW I coined that name.. you could own the only bronzish polka dot in the world for less than a grand...

Took a nice walk with the girls this evening. Neighbors stopped to chat. They have an ancient little white poodle they walk each evening. For some reason that old dog & my girls seem to like each other. They will stand side by side....sort of mingle. Dog will sniff what the girls are grazing, and the girls don't care. Usually the girls will move away from any dog. The old dog is dog/cat aggressive, a bit of a jerk . But seems to like the girls. Just an odd relationship.
