A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

It's beautiful out today. A huge difference from the freezing rain and I've from last night/this morning. I think everyone thinks that spring is here and they're ready for poults. I had someone message me this morning and just took 8 of them. Someone else messaged me about meeting me to pick out some poults tomorrow and I got an email from someone else! I would love to be cleaned out lol. Now if only some people would message me about chicks lol

I just got an unsolicited call from someone wanting turkeys. Had to inform him that the hens are not laying yet and that I won't have any to sell until a month after they start laying. He was disappointed.

My guess is that they are most likely hatching BB turkeys. I also suspect their claim of making hybrid turkeys is the same false claim that the hatcheries dealing in white leghorns make when they claim they are hybrids.

My guess, the word hybred is being used very liberally by them. They are going WAY back to the beginning of the Broadbreasted turkeys, which was a hybred, and saying theirs are.

I do know they have Toms that are huge in the breeding programs ( at least the one in Perham does). I think they are all AI as the Toms can barely walk let alone crawl on top of a hen, and not break her back.

Cindy, give them a call and tell them you want a Slate, a Bourbon Red and a Royal palm and see what they tell you,.,...:lau:lau:lau

The Toms it appears will be in Nebraska. Too bad, at Perham you can buy the breeders when they are done with them for eating. Or you use to be able to, they would run 80-100 pounds or more. It was like butchering a half a pig. They use to charge 10-15 bucks but that was years ago.

As near as I can tell, what they mean by hybrid is that they use multiple lines of the same variety and claim that the offspring are hybrids. It makes people think that they won't breed true because true hybrids cannot breed true.

Commercial facilities use AI even in cases where natural breeding is possible because it is much more efficient and in normal, proper implementation causes no injuries to the hens.

I don’t know that I’ll be doing a lot of business with them. We (DH and I) were returning from Mayo when a truck loaded down with chickens passed us going like 90mph (literally... the speed limit there is 80). There were heads and feet and wings flopping out everywhere like something from a PETA brochure. Probably headed to the processing plant they mentioned in the story. It all seems like something from a nightmare to me. That’s when I started buying my chicken & eggs from the Hutterites. Very nice people but I’m not sure their farming operations are all that different from the CAFO’s. I haven’t seen them though, so I don’t know. People like us... millions and millions and millions of people like us with little itty bitty operations... WE should be feeding the world not the CAFOs. But no, because: regulations...

That is the same company that has the turkey aggression and feed http://resources.hybridturkeys.com/nutrition/troubleshooting

Interesting... it couldn’t be because they’re bred year after year after year for little else but big breasts almost too massive to even haul around...? That would sure make ME cranky! But no, it’s the feed. Well maybe it is. I’m guessing there’s more to it (which they did say). Have you figured out I’m not a fan of factory farming? :rant

I had the dominant Tom attacking me. Processed him and the next one to take the kingship started to attack me too...nari....r2elk posted the Link. I was feeding chicken feed and switched to turkey feed. In less than a week I thought someone swapped my bird. He was fine until the mullberries got ripe... Every time he ate anything but turkey feed he turned into a belly button.

Mine always like me... and I don’t feed them most the summer...I make them work for their food... of course most their work seems to be near the WW’s tomatos..

Ha
I know you have had your share of belly buttons.
The 2 I have now have been off turkey feed since the co op closed the feed division last fall. They have been fine.... not related to the belly buttons... some birds must need the nutrients in greater quantities
