Do my Speckled Sussex have enough spots? I read someplace that they were supposed to have large areas of brown. I don't know about that!

It's been raining since 11am. When I went to lock up the coops at 7 the creek was over it's banks. The poultry yard had a good flow going through it. It's on a flat spot on a short hill. The creek is about 6' below the poultry yard. The water comes down the hill to the creek. Some bedding was up against the coops so I had to move it to shut the door.. the coops have dirt floors with deep litter. Could be a big mess tomorrow.
Some of the stupid turkeys were in the trees.

I agree. I would love some rain at this point, but that looks pretty wicked to me.

Just stay safe, Molpet. Where I am there are no close creeks and no mountains towering over me, although I do live on a ridge between two mountains. And I believe I'm several hundred feet above the Potomac River.

That said, I HAVE lived in areas where flooding was a problem and in areas where all roads were blocked from the flooding river and multiple creeks and streams. I have been closed in on all sides and stranded on a hilly island.

Believe me, I really like my little mountain ridge.

the white feathers in the hens tail is troubling.

The problem with SS is normally too much white. By the time they are two or three most hens have way too much white.

Your rooster appears to have so much white on his wing it appears as a bar. He also appears to have a dux wing.

Getting a show quality SS is extremely hard. I only have one Hen that has it and the stupid rooster took the feathers off her back.



None of this years hatch will make a show bird.

The great thing about SS is their personality, no matter what they look like they are great birds.

Thanks, Ralphie - I will try and get better pics tomorrow (if my help shows up) and will look at the roo's wing. Never noticed it being different and not sure it is or if he was just miffed cause he was in my lap moments before. I had been giving him a lot of "scratches" under his wings lol. As to the "bar", I think each feather there has a white spot - again, will look closer at that.

I am not too concerned over the extra white - there is little to no chance I would ever show any of the birds that I have anyway. I was just puzzled on why someone would think it better if they were more solid colored since they are surely supposed to be "speckled".

So far (and knock on wood), all these chickens seem to be friendly - and I only have the one Dominque rooster who "seems" to want to challenge me. He hasn't and if he does, he will be in for a real surprise. Still, several have been quite content to jump in my lap (or on my head) to be petted

The other plus on the Sussex is that they are supposed to lay all winter - that is a bonus for me since I do not run supplemental lighting. I had to run it 24/7 the last few years because of how it was set up here - but that's all changed with having power to the shed itself now.
