That’s makes sense. I’m not sure what happened, but now it can lift its head almost as well as the other poults. Now the legs. She still can’t walk but we are making progress.

I’ve been (unsuccessfully) avoiding the internet as much as possible in hopes of getting outdoor work done while it’s not winter. That’s not going very well. So I seem to go a couple of weeks in between visits to BYC, and then I find it impossible to catch up. I usually scan the first couple pages and the last couple pages of you-all’s new posts.

I always raised my poults and chicks together. But you do have to be prepared to separate them when they reach sexual maturity, because toms will smash pullets and hens, and jennies will mercilessly attack the wounded. In fact, I sold my last two (female) turkeys because I was tired of my chickens getting hurt. I loved free range turkeys, and I felt sad seeing them penned up.

If I ever see Sweetgrass turkeys available, I will probably get some again.

Too bad you are so far away. I believe that I currently have 20 Sweetgrass poults along with 2 Tri-Color Mottled Blacks and 4 Tri-Color Mottled Slates.

Too bad you are so far away. I believe that I currently have 20 Sweetgrass poults along with 2 Tri-Color Mottled Blacks and 4 Tri-Color Mottled Slates.

R2elk - I have Sweetgrass on my list - but you will still be too far away. lol.

Looks like in a couple of days I will have 6 Bourbon Red eggs to hatch to go along with the one that wandered "back" here. I believe those are coming from Wisconsin.

I still have 6 Midget White poults and 2 Narragansett.

We did indeed bypass those recessive blue slates, then found some normal blue slates near Gettysburg, PA - and a lot closer to where I live. We ended up taking 11 poults - 4 that went to a friend of mine and 7 still here. The black and one lavender/lilac? are supposed to be 2 weeks old - but I have a hunch maybe closer to 4. The others are 3 blue slates and 2 lavender/lilac. I am assuming those are basically the same - with the advent of "50 shades of gray".

Then there are the 32 naked neck cross with all my different breeds of chickens - just to see if I can get a white one that lays white eggs out of my California Whites. It's an experiment!

Self Blue and Lavender (BB DD) are the same thing. They are homozygous for the Slate gene which hides the Black. Lilac (bb DD) is different and has no black genes.

I looked it up and even found Kevin Porter's post on here. I have a better understanding now. Other than that, I sorta doubt these are lilac and are probably lavenders.

So if a Tom has a few turkey hens, will he still try to court and pursue chickens? I had hoped to run them together but if it isn't safe I won't. Do the turkey hens hurt chickens also?

We have very limited turkey experience with chickens. The backyard turkey we had in the past ran in the same area where our chickens were but where they weren't raised up together the turkey pretty much ignored the chickens.
