A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

First time showing turkeys. Quite a fun experience. I got Champion and reserve with The two I brought, out of a class of 3 turkeys. Definitely something I’ll be Doing again.

My black tom was misbehaving the entire time though. He kept shoving his cage away from the wall and into the aisle, harassing the royal palm beside him, finishing His cup of food in less than 5 minutes, and shredded his tail feathers on the cage wall a day before judging.

My white Holland did none of this.

Congratulations!! They are beautiful birds!

Hope all are doing well during this winter storm. The temp got down to zero at the lowest last night. I lost a rusty chocolate poult to a freak bullying incident. A couple more had bloody snoods. I think I have eliminated the picking with the use of blue kote and red bulbs.

We lost our Narragansett hen, Beretta (of course my son's favorite) and nearly lost a light sweetgrass hen from one of the new pups we got to train as LGDs (Kangal/Anatolian mixes). They had been doing so well, and my old Pyrenees usually corrects new dogs but he is aging. Losses happen when training new pups, it's unfortunately part of the process. Im assuming the hens were squatted to lay or be bred and didnt attempt to get away. None of the toms have been injured. The remaining hens were removed from the lot as a precaution.

The injured light sweetgrass hen seems to be doing okay despite her injuries, which were pretty severe. If she was doing poorly we would cull, but she us walking, eating, and drinking, and miraculously healing.

I have Narragansett eggs in the incubator, as well as some eggs off the light sweetgrass hens that had a red sweetgrass over them, so should be fall fires. I will post back as I can with updates. The spring semester has started and I am up to my eyeballs in books and work.

It has been -30 hereabouts, and my turkeys don't particularly care about the cold much, except they would like to eat more to keep those inner furnaces stoked. The chickens care a lot more than the turkeys, though.
I had one of my young goat does come down with pneumonia because the cold came on pretty fast, a go 60 degree swing was a lot for the animals.

Yes that is a hard swing on those temps! I hope your doe pulls through!

looks like she is going to be ok. It turned out to be my son's spring pick from last year, Waffles. She is now the runtiest goat out there, I really hope she doesn't get knocked up but I don't really have a way to keep them apart. If I were to try, they turn to liquid and rejoin like mercury.
